It might take a sec, but I can usually figure out what game someone's playing by the graphics (and I mean CoD).

First, those don't look exactly the same. They are very similar, but they're also out of context. The full gameplay and look of different war shooters is different from game to game. Yes, some might be direct copies of another, but the good ones can stand out.

Secondly, the games might look the same to someone who doesn't know what game they are, but so would Fable 3 and Skyrim or Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Not every game is going to have a completely unique, one of a kind style that is instantly recognizable. But if you've played the games before, you'll know the differences.

Finally, you're still over-simplifying FPSs. Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Half Life, etc are all vastly different from one another. You're calling out one subgenre, the goal of which is to look realistic. There's not going to be any stylized graphics or animation in a game that is emulating real life.

Then it wouldn't be a Call of Duty game. Borderlands has a cel shaded look, though.

This is what always baffled me about those games and when it happens in comic books. You use them to escape reality, why would you want it to mirror it? That's not to say that they can't be good (Codename: Geronimo and anything by Art Spiegelman), but it just shows why people like Ellis, Vaughn, and Morrison understand the genre so well.

Sure it would. It's still the same gameplay, just cell-shaded anime style graphics. I would want it to be styled like Madworld.

Why can't Kaare Andrews make covers like those Deadpool ones for the UU? Damn those are good looking.

Four minute preview of The Amazing Dark Twilight Lantern Man.

The special effects reminded me of Green Lantern. The whole "cops chasing Spider-Man" was straight from Nolan's Dark Knight saga (there's even a part where a guy asks "who are you?" and I swear I was wanting for him Bale to show up "I'm Batman"). The whole "father has secret" reminded me of Ang Lee's Hulk (there's a part where Connors is like "you think this happened to you by accident?"). Emma Stone is pretty much MJ (which makes no sense whatsoever).

Oh and that opening scene was probably the stupidest thing I have seen all year.

Realism does not exclude escapism. The graphics might be realistic, but it's not as if the gameplay is what our lives are like. Very, very few of the people who buy Call of Duty are soldiers. They aren't out there every day fighting Russians or whichever opposing faction the game features. The game is still very much an escapist fantasy for those playing it.

However, it seems that you're just setting up another straw man to continue hating on first person shooters. If the realism is a problem for you, play a game like Halo or BioShock, which are nothing like Call of Duty.

Sure it would. It's still the same gameplay, just cell-shaded anime style graphics.
If it's a completely different style of graphics then the gameplay isn't the same. Once again, Call of Duty is about being a realistic first person shooter. Adding that kind of graphics to Call of Duty would change that.

I love the James Bond games (Not sure if I would if I hadn't grown up on them though) and I LOVE Metroid Prime and The Conduit series.

You can still have realism and not have realistic graphics. It's all about having good storytelling.

Apparently you just don't understand Call of Duty, then. It's not just about realism from a storytelling standpoint; storytelling is probably the least important part of the Call of Duty games. Sure, the campaigns are pretty solid, but most people buy them for the multiplayer. They play it because the maps look like real places, the guns like real guns, the players like real soldiers. If that changed, it wouldn't be Call of Duty anymore. It would be like making a hyper-realistic Mario game.

I've never played CoD on anything, but multiplayer when I'm over at friends' houses. I just assumed that it had some deep single player experience due to the popularity of it because I was severely unimpressed with the multiplayer.

So we're hating on the new Spider-Man movie? Is this what we're doing?

    I think it looks godawful.

I just realized that the opening scene reminds me of that little kid in Daredevil who was scared of Matt and he was all like "I'm not bad guy" and then it switches over to Bendis's Daredevil run.

    1. Special effects are special effects. One could say that Green Lantern's special effects reminded them of the effects in Men in Black and I would agree.
    2. Cops chased Spiderman in the first film...
    3. The whole "Who are you?" "Your friendly neighborhood Spiderman!" thing has been used in the comics for decades. I'm assuming they left Spiderman's response out of the trailer.
    4. So because in one iteration of a Hulk story, Bruce Banner's father had a secret that means that NO DADS EVER can have secrets?
    5. It's impossible for one to draw a reasonable conclusion about Emma Stone's character from a four minute trailer during which she is shown for less than thirty seconds.

You're just looking for reasons to hate this movie now. =p

I actually really enjoy the campaign for the Modern Warfare series. It's a cool story.
