I have seen The Avengers five times XD

Have you seen it in IMAX yet? I haven't yet, but I'm going to try to this weekend. It's been a long time since I've seen an IMAX movie and the Avengers is definitely one that deserves the added scale.

Yep! It was well worth the extra cash. Make sure you sit farther away then I did though, I kept having to turn my head to see everything lol.

Gameplay and graphics are both important, though. Certain elements of gameplay simply can't work with worse graphics. Portal would have to be drastically changed to fit an 8-bit, or even a 64-bit, world. It depends heavily on the physics that simply wouldn't run smoothly on an older system. Unless a game is going for a quirky or nostalgic feel, like Minecraft, there's no point in limiting the graphics.

With modern games, I see no point in not going for the best graphics possible. Sure, the old Mario games still stand up, but they were at the top of the class graphics-wise at the time. Would Mario 64 be as good of a game if it ran on Super Nintendo graphics? Not even close. Similarly, Skyward Sword would have been much better if it was in HD. Yes, it is still a great game; but I hate playing it, knowing that it could have looked better.

The graphics and the gameplay are one in the same, really. They depend on one another. If they don't match, the game doesn't work. Minecraft would be terrible in HD, because it depends on being blocky. Uncharted would be terrible with Minecraft graphics.

I agree on some points but not all. I think it's a bit like the art vs writing debate in comics. Obviously we'd like both aspects to be good. Do you go for the book with good writing but bad art, or the book with bad writing but good art ?

For me, if the writing's not up to a certain standard, I can't carry on with the book. It's the same with games for me. If the gameplay's not there then I'm not going to be playing for very long regardless of how good looking it is.


Oh and thecrimson, I read Scarlet Spider #1 today. Colour me impressed. Might post some more substantial thoughts later on. Might have to take a look at my pull list to see if I can squeeze it in.

That's what I'm saying, you've got to have both. With comics, I'd prefer better writing over better art, but bad art can definitely get in the way of a great story. If a game's graphics don't fit in well with its gameplay, it gets in the way. People who say old games didn't depend on graphics couldn't be more wrong. Almost any classic game that we love - Duck Hunt, Super Mario Land, Goldeneye - was made with what would then be considered great graphics.

It's like movies. We don't have black and white movies anymore for a reason. Yes, it happens occasionally, but it's because of a stylistic choice by the director. The Avengers, however, would not have been as good in black and white, and it wouldn't have worked as well without modern CGI.

This is precisely why I don't play FPSs. They are all pretty much the same game.

Methinks you haven't played very many FPSs. That's like saying platformers are all pretty much the same game.

I never said Dark Knight Rises won't make a lot of money. I said it has a lot of work to do if it wants to climb out of the shadow of the Avengers. In fact, I think it will be huge at the box office. I just don't think it will be Avengers huge. Honestly, I don't even think it will hit Dark Knight numbers. Then again, no one expected Avengers to do this well, either. And not only is it doing well, it's absolutely crushing everything.

In just 19 days, its one billion dollar total gets it:
#18 Domestic all time
#11 Worldwide all time

Also the records for:
Opening weekend (by far)
2nd weekend (by far)
Fastest to 100 through 350 million
...and many more

And, it brings the Marvel Cinematic franchise to (so far) the #6 grossing franchise of all time, 3 spots ahead of the next comic book franchise (Batman, obviously).


But like Jer said, I want them all to do well. However, if I had to pick, I'd prefer Avengers to win. But not because I prefer Marvel to DC, but because it has more benefit for us. Ever dollar that Avengers makes is another dollar that goes towards more Marvel movies and sequels, plus more profit that can afford them to take a risk on a Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant Man film. It also means WB/DC might actually get off their asses and try to make a decent non-Batman superhero movie. They've got to be pissed that the Avengers had an opening weekend domestic total that was almost as much as Green Lantern's worldwide gross. If this results in more good superhero movies, then we all win. Hopefully they'll realize that a Flash movie could actually be pretty awesome rather than depending on Batman and Superman to do all the work.

However, as far as Dark Knight Rises goes, I think it will be great. I think it will be a huge success. I just don't think it can top Dark Knight's numbers, which was boosted by the major hype surrounding Heath Ledger's death and outstanding performance. I doubt anyone's performance in DKR will be talked about like Ledger's Oscar nominated Joker was in 2008.

Yeah, I want something to kick DC on their ass so they can make more then just Batman or Batman like movies (Jonah Hex). A Superman movie where the villain is Darkseid is just waiting to be made.

OR a good Wonder Woman movie.

This love affair DC seems to have with Batman needs to stop. They have plenty of good characters that need to come into the light.

Good characters like Catman! :P

But on a more serious not Lobdell worked on the Fantastic Four. One of my favorite issues from that era

As for the FPS thing, I play Halo and Call of Duty a lot, and while some elements might be similar, the way you play the games are completely different.

If by the same, you mean they are all games with shooting, then I'd agree.

Not ALL FPS's are the same. War is a common motif, yes, but if you have the guts to do something different, you might be pleasantly surprised with the resulting product.

For me, story is a HUGE part of the game. I'm not content to just run and gun through the campaign, no matter how beautiful the graphics are or how great the game is controlled. If the story sucks, I don't see the game being worth my time.

It's alot more likely that we will see another Catwoman movie rather than a Wonder Woman movie, which is a shame since Marvel Studio's Thor is working out, but WB's Immortals was barely a success and Wrath of the Titans gladly flopped for being such a turd, now they got their eyes on the 300 prequel.
