The more popular a character, the more detractors said character will get. Look at all the people who claim to hate Wolverine. Yet Wolverine And The X-Men is one of Marvel's best selling titles.
The days of that kind of consistency are long past.
Look at it like some random filler episode of any random anime and just ignore it. It was obvious when it happened that it would bare no impact on what Dan wanted to do.
The only women we've seen Peter interact with over the last batch of issues of Amazing are Mary Jane and Julia Carpenter. (And we all know how Dan feels about Peter dating a superheroine.) We don't even see Peter interacting with Aunt May these days. It's the most obvious choice. I'm just looking for the trick, because I know there's a trick. I don't know what the trick is, but I know there's a trick, so I question everything.
Not that it's the best example but season 2 of Community featured two characters together for pretty much the entire season. Their relationship was portrayed with enough subtlety that viewers didn't know until it came to light. Not that it's a hard and fast rule and not that it can't be someone else but...
Of course I did make this joke.
Can you say "extremely contrived?"That wasn't the deal. Mephisto is incompetent.
I knew you could.
Very true. I just look at the issues before. Who has Peter been interacting with since the end of Spider-Island within the pages of Amazing? That's called "leading the audience". At least, it could be. It's a tool used to subvert expectations. You make the audience think its one thing by doign stuff like cutting to that character, but you never reference them by name or any definitive characteristics, so that later on you can reveal its something completely different and surprise people.
The dating do-si-do really came around after Wolfman broke up Peter and MJ. And that lasted until the wedding. (How can anyone explain his on-again/off-again thing with Felicia?)1) You're point is not understandable. That last line... I don't know what you're trying to say.
2) The point about under Stan Lee is simply false. Peter's love life was in flux for the first sixty issues, sure, but there was never an inevitability about the break-ups, and he was at least nominally attached to a woman almost all the time. But from issue 60 onward there's no doubt. He dates/loves Gwen, who was the love interest. It is only when Stan left and Conway killed her that there was any question of who'd he date next, and that wasn't even a real question either, because Mary Jane slides in at the end of the issue after Gwen dies.
Have people forgotten Gwen Stacy, despite having the notable handicap of being dead for about 40 years now? What you're advocating will not happen. (Never mind that Peter will never be in a relationship with any woman that will last 20-30 years in the real world.)
And MJ is a creation of Spider-Man's actual creators. Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr. created her. She is a huge part of the Spider-Man legacy.

And your point is?
I know Romita didn't have a hand in creating Gwen. He had a hand in creating MJ, in designing her. But she had been name dropped and hinted at and shown (with face obscured) for several issues well before Gwen even showed up. So MJ's creators are Lee/Ditko/Romita (which is a trifecta of Spider-Awesome.)
And Romita had a hand in creating other characters who are really important. Like The Rhino and The Kingpin. And minor characters like George Stacy.
But Romita was also involved in killing Gwen. Sure, it was Gerry Conway's idea to kill Gwen but Romita was the one who got the ball rolling, per Conway's word on the subject. And Romita agreed with the notion of killing Gwen.

I lol to myself because whenever somebody assumes MJ and Peter are 2 b 4eva, I think of poor zombie Gwen Stacy with a tear running down her cheek.
That said, I'm totally shipping Sable x Spidey. She's like Black Cat's older but equally as foxy prude sister.
Yep. We all know that Peter will never date a super heroine in the pages of ASM. That's not to say that some other writer wouldn't want to explore that idea outside the title. Especially with Silver Sable or Ms. Marvel. Although it will never get pass the pals level for Peter.
I think that Spidey will have more than Ms. Marvel or Silver Sable to worry about. The list might probably get expand to include The She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, The Black Widow, and Psylocke. And a diverse list of 6 alternate super heroines to the Black Cat will ensure that no one heroine will stand out as Spidey's potential love interest. And it might bring out an audience who are fans of the heroines mentioned into reading Spider-Man because of those mutual friendships that they have with Spidey.

You know Darthfury78 I'm really coming around to your pairing of Spider-Man and Mystique. I figure since she can shape-shift, she can take on the look of any of Spidey's amours! MJ on Monday, Gwen on Tuesday, Felicia on Wednesday, Ms Marvel on Thursday, Lady Bova on Friday - everybody on CBR wins!
What that has to do with what i said ? i said recognition, you were one of the people who said mj is more popular among the mainstream audience, would she remain so, when another character was in her spot for as long as she has ? no, they wouldnt, yes,us fan would remember her,but not the general public,mj would be almost like gwen, with the bonus of not being 7 feet under.
See,this is exactly what i was talking about ? why are you so sure ? Becouse mj is special/soulmate. BAH give me a break. Get out of your shell the sky has already fallen.(Never mind that Peter will never be in a relationship with any woman that will last 20-30 years in the real world.)
Sounds like you're just upset that they killed Gwen.
The next time Peter is with MJ, it won't last 20-30 years in the real world. It's an on-again/off-again relationship between Peter and MJ.See,this is exactly what i was talking about ? why are you so sure ? Becouse mj is special/soulmate. BAH give me a break. Because that's how it works with comics and their main love interest, which is what MJ is.

As much as I like MJ, which is a lot, I'd be stoked to see him date pretty much any cool superheroine in the vein of Sable or Captain Marvel.
Primary pulls: X-Factor, Hawkeye, Young Avengers, Avengers Arena, X-Men: Legacy, Uncanny X-Force, FF, Archer and Armstrong
Oohh, a Betty fan. Interesting.
Where did I say I was upset about Peter and MJ splitting up? I merely said that MJ is the preeminent love interest of the franchise. And that she and Peter will have an on-again/off-again relationship.
Because practically every super hero has this with their main love interest.
How many times do we need to see Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris get together?
How many times do we need to see Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter get together?
How many times do we need to see Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters get together?
I could go on with this.
