What's potent about Spider-Man, though, is what he represents. I think the other heroes in the 616 understand that Spider-Man represents everything that makes a true superhero. He is the very image of a small man in a large world, sacrificing everything and using every last drop he's got to save a city that despises him. In a way, he's the heart and soul of the superhero community.

If he went missing, the public might not flip out, but the other heroes would feel a gaping hole, and I think some of them (especially the street-level heroes who were close to him) would want to do something about it.
You're probably right...especially DD, who was his friend, and Flash, who idolizes him.

There was a story in the 80s that dealt with a similar theme for a month. Spidey went missing after a battle with Magma. Don't recall what heroes got involved, point being that his absence wasn't major news but it was felt.

So, you're a big Spider-Girl fan then, yeah?

Actually, all of your ideas seem to be about nobody being as good as Spidey. Whilst I'm sure there are a few equally hardcore fans who might believe that, I can't imagine that it would sell many books.

Well, my intent was not to diss Spider-Girl, but to point out the conflict between those who would try to fill the gap and those who would be offended by anyone trying to fill the gap.

I'm thinking along the lines of Miles Morales's first encounter with Spider-Woman in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.

More like "nobody being as good at being Spidey as Spidey".

In a recent issue of New Avengers, Luke Cage referred to Daredevil as the world's greatest superhero, and said "The question isn't whether Daredevil is Avengers material, but whether the Avengers are Daredevil material." And it's hard to argue with him. Pound for pound, I've gotta call Daredevil the single most impressive superhero in the Marvel Universe.

However great he might be, though, he could never be Spider-Man.

Whilst I'm sure there are a few equally hardcore fans who might believe that, I can't imagine that it would sell many books.
Maybe not. It's just an idea, and probably a little too predictable.

I want to speculate but I've gotta admit I haven't heard anything about where these rumors are actually coming from. Has someone from Marvel actually said anything about it? What did I miss that got this started?

    Out of the given options
    • Flash Thompson: Venom will stay Venom, at least I expect that for a while
    • Kaine Parker: He will stay out of Manhattan as Scarlet-Spider
    • Miles Morales: Has absolutely no reason to dump his world and family
    • Ben Reilly: For better or worse, I hope he stays dead

As for the 'other' option, maybe Hobie Brown? I hope none

I didn't really thought this would happen, but now that I look at what's going on right now in ends of the earth, the way doc ock is pushing spider-man and the possibility that he's just doing it so that spider-man will kill him, and what's going to happen with the lizard after that, I think peter will probably need a break from being spider-man, altough I don't know what will happen between the end of the lizard arc and 700.

For who would replace him, I think Flash will stay as venom because I don't think he's ready to be spider-man(and hope because I'm having way too much fun with venom right now), I would be surprised to see Kaine in new-york, moving Miles morales from the ultimate universe would be a very stupid move and with all the problem Ben reilly had with fans, I don't think we'll see him come back.

Honestly, If Peter isn't spider-man anymore at 700, I have no clue who would replace him.

Aren't they currently doing this with both Deadpool and Iron Man? Would Marvel really be lame enough to retread the "replacement superhero" storyline in just a few months time? (Not counting that they already replaced Pete with Miles in Ultimate.)

I suspect you're right Mister Mets.

If I had to choose one though I'd go with Kaine.

If Peter Parker is taking a sabbatical, I definitely want his substitute to be Flash Thompson. Dude kinda deserves it.

Of course, I would want Pete to reveal himself to Flash beforehand, if only to see the look on his face.
I'd love to see Flash's face if Peter revealed himself as Spider-Man to him before Flash took over, having said that I don't see Flash as ''Spidey material'' personally.

Does anyone else think that Mister Mets is secretly a Marvel employee?

There is not prove about someone takes the mantle of Spider-Man; so It's Peter Parker.

In five years, maybe Kaine or Flash if they have enough development in their books.

Actually, this would be the perfect time for Mavel to bring back Ben. In the absence of Peter, the city is in need of a hero and out of the shadows comes a figure who has been living his whole life in just that, the shadow of Peter. After he disintegrated and Miles Warren or the Jackal put his remains in a cloning pod, he was rejuvenated an healed, but this time with the knowledge knowing HE indeed IS/WAS the clone. So he took a bus and left town, all the while hanging low when all of a sudden a major villain comes to town, and he knows what he has to do. I think this would be great as we'd get to see the look on Peter's face, and get insight to how Kaine feels when he finds out his "brother" is alive.

I will buy and read it regardless, but I hope we don't end up with a "Reign of the Supermen" or "Battle for the Cowl" type of arc or storyline it's been done so many times across so many characters and I'd think that the creative team has much better or different plans in store.
