Let WB come out with a JL movie and then we can compare franchises but the sad fact is that a JL movie is still a long time away. With Superman coming out next year and the Nolan version of Batman coming to an end this summer, seems like we are back to square one (was the JL movie project ever further than square one?)
The JLA movie got far enough along that I think they had a cast, script and even costume designs. Armie Hammer (who went on to be in the Social Network) said he even went in to try on the Batsuit.

Well now Dark Knight Rises has to worry about competing with Avengers in it's only avenue beyond straight 2D. Because Avengers isbreaking IMAX records Wow.

IMAX is the main appeal for TDKR, as Nolan films more of his movies using IMAX Cameras then anyone else, but the number of screens is so limited this isn't as big a commercial advantage as 3D. So TDK might be able to break Avengers IMAX record..but damn. The furor for Avengers is outta this world. It deserves it too, it's a fantastic movie.

And making movies like hiring Zach Synder is a step backwards, imo, not forwards.
I like that thinking. They do have Superman in the chamber. If superman does well I can't help but think the next move is a superman/batman movie.

then rebooted batman movie with an actor who plays Bruce in superman/batman movie, and then superman sequel, then batman sequel, superman/batman sequel, another batman sequel....

Sadly, I am of the mind that hiring Zack Synder is not quite "elevating your game" but I dunno, I guess surprises can happen? I'm not exactly holding my breath that Superman will be much better then Green Lantern, let along Avengers quality, just by virtue of the folk involved. But hey, surprises can happen, I expected Avengers to do well, but be the highest grossing opening weekend of all time? To break records left and right? To do all that and make all that money and still be a great film that I walked out of the theater wanting to see again? That was a bit of a surprise, yeah.

Very possible. Good call. The LOTR trilogy was COLOSSAL back in the early 00's. The Hobbit has a December release too - always a good time for epics.

TDKR may come close to Avengers, but if it beats it, I'll be .... very surprised.

If Heath Ledger was still alive and the Joker was in the movie (let's face it, some of Bane's stuff was almost certainly intended for the Joker) then TDKR would have topped Avengers, no problem.

TDKR has a few obstacles in its way.

    1. TDK did as well as it did because it featured THE definitive Batman antagonist and most famous villain in all of comics history. Ledger's death and the mystique surrounding his last completed role was instrumental in putting curious bums on seats, but it was his performance that resulted in repeat viewings and pushed the box office takings into the stratosphere.

    2. Bane isn't anywhere near as recognisable or iconic to people outside comics. Not even to actual comic readers.

    3. Catwoman is iconic, almost as much as the Joker, but she isn't really a villain, more an anti-heroine. That and I'm just not feeling the buzz.

    4. It looks like Batman isn't actually going to be spending all that much time as Batman in this movie.

    5. Thanks to all the above, it's unlikely TDKR will garner as many repeat viewings as TDK.

My prediction is that TDKR will do better than Begins but not quite as well as Avengers, and certainly not as well as TDK.

Well Inception made 800k and it's a Nolan movie that didn't have any of the things that made Dark Knight successful (besides Nolan himself and Michael Caine).

If Man of Steel does well and a rebooted Batman movie also does well, DC might decide to push ahead with a JL movie. Especially after the success of the Avengers.

Avengers at 640 mil Worldwide in less than 2 weeks. I dont think we are going to be talking about DKR beating it. Just a staggering haul in a short time.

Avengers is just making ridiculous money right now. Also, what if WB decides to stop with Batman for a little while and focus on Superman, maybe another GL movie, try and bring WW and Flash to the big screen, then hit us with a JL movie, possibly with Batman too. And yeah, I remember the JL movie and it was advanced but sadly it stopped with the writers strike and never really took off.

If The Dark Knight Rises was coming out in May, you would have a point. However, it is coming out in a couple of months. While Avengers will still be in some theaters, the number of screens will be greatly reduced by that point, and theater owners will know they will make more money with a new Dark Knight movie in theaters than they will with an Avengers movie 2 months into its release.

How can TDKR not do "quite as well as Avengers" and "certainly not as well as TDK" when Avengers is doing more well than TDK? seriously do people even think before they post?

Loki is'nt the most iconic villain either and guess what Avengers is still successful.Hell Loki was'nt even in the radar. And how exactly was Bane's stuff intended for the Joker? prove it.

Honestly, I kind of hope they do pull back from Batman for a while, but I also hope they don't rush into fill that bat-shaped vacuum.

I agree with other posters that Man of Steel will probably determine the approach that WB takes going forward. More rides on that than the success of DKR.
Why aren't you reading Winter Soldier? You should be!

I wasn't saying it would have to share screens with Avengers, I was saying that not as many people will go see TDKR in IMAX as went to see Avengers.
