Default IF Dark Knight RIses MAKES MORE MONEY THAN AVENGERS THEN...

It's easy to believe considering all of the Nolan batman films are great films first, and great superhero films second. What does that say about the audience if Dark Knight Rises makes more money?

Then again, are box office receipts a good way to judge a film?

Sales mean nothing. Batman Begins made as much as Ironman and then TDK made a billion dollars because of the hype, the viral marketing, and Heath's "OMFG his last performance was so great!"

And to prove that sales mean nothing, this turd almost made a billion dollars.

You could say it gives you a tap on the public perception or what appeals to them at the time? Transformers has a huge audience with kids I imagine. Could be the driving force for the mega money.

Batman Begins didn't make the same as Iron Man. Iron Man made nearly 600 million, Begins didn't even make 500 million.

If TDKR makes more money than Avengers it's because it's the finale to a Batman trilogy where the sequel was a cultural phenomenon. People will not want to miss out on the finale to a trilogy they are invested in.

TDKR will make a ton of money. Whether it will surpass TDK or the Avengers is to be seen. But Nolan has TDK and a massive hype machine going for him, so even if TDKR will be lackluster, it will be successful. Besides, Batman is a successful franchise anyway.

That's not to say that i dont have faith in him. I'm almost certain that it will be a great movie.

Btw, how are the Avengers doing? Do they think it will come close to Dark Knight numbers?

I know both movies will make huge dollars. I'm just wondering if one makes more than the other can we safely come up with a reason why that is?

How about this: It might happen because the Dark Knight is a more established property, overall.

I don't see it happening. The last Batman flick had Heath's death to bring people who would normally never see a Batman movie to the seats. I think DKR will do rather well in the box office mind you...but I can't imagine it will enjoy the same success as it's previous film, or the Avengers movie, which is being blitz advertised. Add in a Free Comic Book day just before it's release to the states, and Avengers has all the ingredients to make a #1 all time record... Will it fulfill that promise, well, we'll know in less than a week. ^.^

Both will make A LOT of money and it doesn't matter which one makes more than the other, we will see them both! I get your point though and most likely if this one doesn't beat TDK in terms of ticket sales and revenue it will be regarded as the lesser of the two even if by any other criteria is better. Comparing it to Avengers, that's just for the fan boys. Chances are it will make less or have less hype (less only when compared to The Avengers) because the Marvel movie features several established heroes the audience is familiar with. In my opinion, great summer to be a movie fan and watch both of these incredible comic book movie properties present the best they have. Sadly for us this is it for Nolan and Batman. But hey, who knows, maybe when/if WB does a JL movie we can get Bale again as Batman with Nolan in the EP role.

It's opening weekend is tracking at 170 million. Which is... insane.

It's made around 200 million outside the US already. And it's not out in China or Japan yet either. It'll make at least 800 million. As will TDKR.

The thing with Ledger's death is, I only think it effected the BO initially. It got people to go see it who wouldn't have normally watched it on opening weekend. But the fact is, a film doesn't make a billion dollars without repeat viewings. So yea, Ledger and him playing the Joker got people interested, but they obviously enjoyed the film to keep going back.

I think whilst TDKR doesn't have a villain like Joker, or the death of one of it's stars, it has enough good will carrying over from the last movie to make it a big box office earner.

If the hysterical hype machine gets involved with it again, claiming that Bane is too scary for kids, etc. then hype will build and it will be seen by more pople. In theory.

Hm I didn't think of that until you said this Lord Bravery. Bane isn't the most marketable villain and maybe Joker had a hand in the sales for The Dark Knight.

According to Nolan, Bane will be a "classic movie monster." I think he'll be pretty marketable.

Well that's it. It wasn't just Heath Ledger's death that helped it's BO. It was the fact that it was Batman vs Joker, which is a true cultural event. The Joker could probably sell a movie all on his own, he's one of those villains who is as iconic as the hero.

But again, I think because so many people liked TDK, they will come back for the finale to the trilogy. And you've gotta figure in Catwoman, who is also a pretty big icon.
