That was Simonson though. Its not like as soon as Simonson left they went back to Donald. Thor didn't get a proper ID back for 10 years because in that intervening 10 years since Simonson they tried to work with it but no other writer did it as good. The stories were limited. Can you name a truly widely well regarded Thor story between Simonson and Jurgens? Over the past 15 years or so there has been an active push by Marvel to go back to basics. To take the essence of what worked for Thor originally and recapture it. I think Simonson's legacy has been a distraction from that sometimes, he was lightning in a bottle you can't recreate it.

Personally, I like my Thor who has a life beyond drinking and fighting. I like that he has a day job. I like that Thor creates epic tales out of mundane reality. Its interesting that a powerful God wants to be human, he wants to be a simple healer. I always consider that as the crux of Thor's character. What does that say about mortality? What does that say about godhood? That is the heart of Thor's story. Without a secret ID you don't get that. He's just a god doing godly things with gods in another world. It doesn't raise the same character questions. Losing Thor's humanity lost a massive chunk of Thor, most importantly without Donald/Jake we don't get Thor really talking about himself, what is happening, how he feels and what he wants.
