Thought this was cool. The Spider by Bruce Timm

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Found this as well. Baen has their Spider ebook for free on their website.

The first story is Satan's Murder Machines from December 1939, which was the inspiration for the mechanic monsters in the Fleischer Superman cartoon (as well as the movie Sky Captain) and was the inspiration for Stan Lee & Larry Lieber to create Iron Man.

The second is Death Reign of the Vampire King from November 1935, starring a villain called the Bat Man.

I just made an entry into my blog (link in sig) about Dynamite's pulp stuff and spent some time talking about The Spider.

Man, I'm just loving all this pulpy goodness, I'm glad it was DE that decided to really give it a go and try to make something of it.

With the talent they've found for the Spider and the Shadow, I'd love to see Dynamite grab a few more pulp heroes. Doc Savage gets mentioned a lot and I'd love to see him, but I'd REALLY love to see Operator #5 return. I've often wondered if some of the Spider / Operator #5 enemies could be linked. Given the current climate in America, maybe the Party of Justice (from the Spider book) would be a successful national 3rd political party that opens the doors for the Purple Army invasion (a 13-part serial from Operator 5)? One war with corruption from Washington (how could they be MORE corrupt than in real life? LOL) coupled with a mass invasion from a foreign power? Both heroes fighting a single massive war over the course of a year's run.

I am overly excited about this run. I wasn't let down by the first issue.

Dynamite needs to put out a trade paper back that collects the Timothy Truman spider mini series and it's sequel,

First published in Aug 1934, if you have an interest in the Spider's original pulp adventures it's a pretty good deal. You get a zip file with pdf, epub and Kindle formats. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Did anyone watch 24? I just realized that the Spider is basically the old pulp version of Jack Bauer. Kind of like how John Reese from Person of Interest is like the Shadow.

POI is definitely a modern day pulp. Very good show. I can see the Jack Bauer = Spider comparison. Especially the pulp Spider, who suffers a lot of psychological issues while killing everyone. :)

Just read issue 1... I know I am a little late to the party, but this book was excellent. It may even convince me to check out some of their other pulp books. Shadow has gotten decent reviews, as has Flash Gordon...can anyone recommend them?

A new pulp publisher & writer likes to say that Dirk Pitt is a modern day Doc Savage, and Special Agent Pendergast is a modern day Shadow. I like to think Repairman Jack is a modern day Spider.
