Not sure if there's a thread buried away in this forum in this regard (don't think the 'New Blood' counts).
We know there was an alliance of villains ('The Light') seeking to reclaim the destiny of humankind for humankind (or should that be 'Earthkind for Earthkind'?) but we don't (yet) know the reasoning for the Rann-sector attack.
We know certain aliens have been posing in human form and have infiltrated into positions of power and influence (an approach used many times over the years in various stories).
Invasion may be along the lines of the Post-Crisis story: Invasion combined with a 'newer' approach to underground geo-politics, etc.
To wit (general strokes):
The Light anticipated that their control of the League wouldn't last very long, so their main goal was to use certain (key) members to attack particular space sectors causing the people of those sectors to come together and attack Earth.
The goal?
Cleansing and control.
By using the League and various other metas, along with combined and coordinated armies worldwide (General Eiling, for example, sides with them) as a form of 'cannon fodder' against the combined (coalition) armies of the Dominators (or, rather, Dominator 'weapons'), Rannians, Khunds etc., the 'endgame' would have key 'villains' stepping up to save the Earth.
It may be that a pseudo-alliance has been made with Darkseid, however it may also be that Darkseid is piggy-backing on to The Light's plan without them (fully) knowing about it. The result? The 'turning point' the villains had been gunning for backfires and the remnants of the League rally together to win the war.
