The only one I remember well is Beach Blanket Bingo, mostly because of the character "Animal", who was not a precursor of the Muppets' drummer, but a statuesque bikini-clad Playboy model. Not that I was aware of that at the time, of course. I was so young when I saw this on tv I didn't even know why she was my favourite character in the movie. I remember liking Paul Lynde too, and also on Bewitched.

Sorry for the podcast pimping, but last October Kat and I did a month of short horror reviews - covering some of the flicks mentioned here including The Haunting, Suspiria, The Changeling, Bride of Frankenstein and Friday the 13th.

I think we'll do the same next October.

I'm glad to see all the Val Lewton love here. I, too, love the Seventh Victim.

To make my tops list, a horror film has to do one of two things: really scare me, or throw enough weird stuff at me to make me feel like my head's too small to contain it all, which, of course, is its own kind of horror: the awe of the incomprehensible (which also accounts for my appreciation of Lovecraft and of the novel House of Leaves).

The ones that really scared me, at least on first viewing:
    Night of the Living Dead
    Alien
I think these need no defense, other than to note that I saw them both originally without any significant advance exposure to their contents besides old-school trailers.

The ones that left my brain small:
    Eraserhead
    The Ring (American version).
Eraserhead is possibly the movie I've seen more times than any with an audience (thank you, 70's and 80's art house theaters!), and perhaps more than any movie period. A real mind-warper.

The Ring was a different variety of mind-bending. Although it was much more straightforward, plot-wise, all the little bits of unexplained weirdness (particularly the puzzle pieces that made up the haunted videotape) got under my skin. The Japanese version suffered because too much was explained (psychic powers--yawn) and the video wasn't as complex a sequence of footage. The Ring gets extra points for really scaring me at an age when I thought I was beyond it.

That leaves me with one floating choice that I can't quite settle on. I'd consider The Shining for its creepy vibe and its puzzling, not-quite-pat feel, or [REC] for its claustrophobic impact and highly engaging story (and its brilliantly concurrent "sequel" [REC] 2--actually a parallel movie).

I really should see Reptillicus. Reptisaurus(!) the Charlton comic which is my namesake was a continuation of their Reptillicus series which was based on the movie. Eventually they decided that the two dollars and sixteen cents they were paying to license the name wasn't a worthwhile investment.

Yeah, Reptilicus and the movie Q kind of stick together in my brain. Both were enjoyable B movies about giant monsters. What else needs to be said?

In an odd coincidence, these were the two movies that they showed at the local Goth Prom on Monday night. The theme this year was the Apocalypse... any apocalypse, zombies or nuclear war, disease or even the final battle between good and evil. The movies were just showing on various tv sets scattered about the bar, and there was plenty of other stuff going on, with multiple DJs, fire dancers, and acrobats. But it was interesting to see the reaction of all these jaded goths to the movies. Some were casual, but others were horrified and yet couldn't look away.

I'm not the biggest horror fan but I do like a little comedy mixed in with my horror. In no order:

    1. Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man)
    2. Audition (a bit slow but man , how f**ked up is that film?!?!?)
    3. Dog Soldiers
    4. Night of the Living Dead
    5. The Exorcist
