It's really quite fun. I mentioned earlier that the 2004 Dawn of the Dead was the only movie I've ever paid to watch in the cinema 3 times. There's a good chance Basket Case was the first one for which I did so twice.

It's pretty cool. The director, Frank Hennenlotter, made a later one called "Brain Damage" about a guy who had a parasite/worm thing in his body that was pretty good, although I haven't seen it in a long, long time.

Man, there are so many good choices out there.

God no, not the Buffy American version, but the original Japanese release version. The American remake of it just can't scare the pants off a 4 year old but the original sends chills down my spine when I watch it.

I'll bank on the 1000 Asian movies. Americans can't translate that shit for nothing. From a country that has "Ghost Hunter" shows and the like, I'd rather suspect that David Copperfield is really a magician and Bill Clinton never had sex with that woman.

You might remember The Grudge/Ju-On for the creepy catboy.

Though at least a pair of dyed-in-the-wool aficionados of vast viewing experience here -- destro & ... oh ... who was that guy? ... oh, yeah: me -- prefer the U.S. Ring to the original Ringu.

If I had to choose 5 Horror Films guaranteed to scare me they would be (in no particular order):

A Nightmare On Elm Street (still the best imho)
Friday the 13th (the original one)
    Madman
    Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
    and
    Evil Dead

I saw the Japanese Ring and thought it was very effective. Haven't seen the US one, but if I had seen that one first I probably wouldn't have bothered watching the Japanese one, since I heard they were very close and I'm not enough of an aficionado to see both just to make the comparison.

Craziest Japanese horror movie I've seen the last few years was an old one from I think the 70s or 80s about a group of schoolgirls who visit what turns out to be the very scary house of an aunt of one of the girls. Hard to describe the weirdness of it, but lots of fun in a bizarre way. The title slips my mind - I'll try a google search to see if I can find it out.

Just saw The Cabin in the Woods, which I thought was quite good.

I think the movie you're thinking of is called 'House'. Was it crazy pyschedelic? Weird piano? Yeah. House is awsome, an undeservedly obscure Japanese horror classic. Anyone who hasn't seen House, go out and rent it! You won't be disapointed.

I hope it's different than the American horror film by the same name!

I saw many of the Universal monster movies on tv as a child but with commercials and the fact that I was a kid, I didn't really appreciate them. I'm now seeing them again on dvd and really love the atmosphere they have. and they are filled with adult themes and subtexts that went over my head as a child.

    The Mummy
    White Zombie
    Dracula's Daughter
    Nosferatu
    Charlie Chan in Egypt
They're scientists, Allan. They know what they're doing.

What's wrong with the American 'House'?! How can you go wrong with a movie that co-stars both Norm from Cheers and Bull from Night Court?!?!

Honestly, that movie, and it's even more tongue-in-cheek sequel (with cameos by Bill Mahr and Cliffy from Cheers!), are guilty pleasures of mine. And the relative success of the first House film made The Monster Squad possible. I'm a sucker for terrible '80s schlock horror flicks. I'll sit through a Critters II/Ghoulies double feature of my own accord.

But the Japanese House is the closest thing I've seen to replicating an acid trip on screen without relying on cheesy on-the-nose '60s effects. It has a dream narrative that would make Dario Argento jealous, and for being a late '70s foregn genre picture, it's got some really effective special effects.

That's the one. CSPDX describes it well. I just had a look at the wiki article and had to laugh at this:
The film company Toho approached Obayashi with the suggestion to make a film like Jaws.
    Never would have guessed that!

Often listed under the Japanese name HAUSU. It's a great flick, though I wouldn't be surprised to find out a lot of people hate it. Actually, more fantasy than horror.
