I missed the most recent issue of New Avengers so I'm likely not the right person to comment on this. But I did feel that the character of Jean/Phoenix was diminished when Byrne retconed her in the pages of Fantastic Four.

Jean is a xerox product of Fongi and Rook'shir. Rachel basically slept with a distant cousin when she was with Korvus.
Now that the shoe is on the other foot I wonder if she feels any remorse at how she treated her clone Madelyne Pryor.
