I must admit that I'm a little disappointed Marvel didn't make the original Nick look a little more like the Hoff.....

Batgirl was created because the Batman tv show producers wanted to add a female character.
Well, as I said, I don't necessarily have a problem with the basic idea of making things more friendly to potential new readers drummed up by the movies. For example, they are clearly going out of their way to make Hawkeye look much more like the movie version as well, as you can see on this cover for Captain America & Hawkeye:

But they aren't doing it by making the character Hawkeye's long-lost son, who happens to have be named Clint Barton Jr. and is also an expert bowman. I mean, yeesh, really, that's the best they could come up with? I never thought Nick Fury would turn out to be the 21st century version of Scott Summers.

As JKCarrier notes, this kind of thing isn't new in the world of comics.

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."

I don't think it's that bad an idea. The old Fury and his SHIELD buddies were getting kind of old, what with their WWII backgrounds. SHIELD could use some new blood. Now, if they could only do something with the organization besides having them micromanage super-heroes.

My theory was a half reboot to fix things inside the Marvel Universe.

They could reset timelines and fix books and characters they wanna change. They could use this half reboot premise to reset Peter Parker's age to 20 , he never got engaged in the 616 Universe at all. Place him in college. He's been Spidey for 5 years.

You can take this Nick Fury ...and basically use his history in Afganistan and Iraq. You can use that history and say , he's the original Nick Fury now since the Universe is now 5 years old essentially. Beyond Captain America who had a 1940's Fury . But its been 60+ years and things have changed. That Nick Fury died many years ago and this one exists now and has .

Its a better move than half assed attempts like this that makes you wanna laugh . Plus gets him out of that silly costume.
    Yeah, I agree with this.

I'm glad they didn't kill the real Nick off though. He's one of my favorite characters, and I actually named my son, Nicholas, after him.

Yeah, original Nick will be back. New Nick will be the new deal for a few years, but after the movies are done with, nobody will want to use him any more and he'll be killed off and Old Nick will be the ONlY Nick, he'll mourn Nick Jr. for all of one issue, and it will be business as usual at the house of ideas...

    A few things.

to be nitpicky, it wasn't Maria Hill, but Daisy Johnson, or Quake, that was talking to them at the end, and she is currently the Head of SHIELD, as setup at the end of Secret Warriors, when Nick maneuvered for it to be setup post Norman.

I am against this on concept, but ... it wasn't ... that bad, and if we ignore the odd character art choice at the end ... almost passable.

Also I didn't read it that he Nick would age from now on, but rather that he didn't continue to generate new serum, so wasn't a font for others to utilize any more, I realize they seemed to contradict themselves in the dialogue so that's the way im interpreting it.

I love Nick Fury, and the espionage side of Marvel, and I wouldn't mind a new SHIELD series, with Daisy & Dum Dum running a new SHIELD, with field agents Marcus Jhonson, as he has to respect his mother, and Colson.

I don't mind that Nick Fury has a long-lost son. I don't mind that this son is a minority.

I do mind that Fury Junior has come out of nowhere and is suddenly considered qualified to run SHIELD, though there has been a lot of that happening in recent years. And I definitely object to an iconic character like Fury get side-lined by a Samuel L. Jackson wanna-be. And I'm sick of Ultimates fans telling us that Nick Fury is old and over-the-hill, when Samuel L. Jackson himself is 63 years old.

But ultimately, this doesn't really matter, because I gave up on Marvel a couple of years ago. As long as Quesada is running the show and repeatedly shoving Bendis in our faces 24/7, I'm not buying or even looking at their comics.

Didn't read the story and not really a fan of Nick Fury, but....

How did they explain that the original Nick Fury, who is white, was able to have a son, who is African American?

    Just curious.

I haven't read it either, but I would assume the mother was African American. Is there any other way?

What I'd like them to explain is how Nick Fury -- WHO ISN'T MARRIED -- was able to have a son.

    Hmmmm?
