I don't think it did gang busters at all, it did 16k in the direct market when it opened and did another 20k through book scan for the year of 2010 and another 14k in 2011 through bookscan. A modest hit to be sure, but hardly gangbuster sales.

I'm not entirely sure what decent numbers would be for an OGN to be honest, but it was in seventh place for DC's offerings of the year behind: Watchmen,Batman: Year One,V For Vendetta, Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke and Hush, all of which are pretty old. To me that sounds like a mild success at best especially considering the advertising it got.

An OGN is held to different standards according to the articles I read. Superman: Earth One is one of the best selling OGNs DC has put out in quite a while. Of the books you listed, excluding Hush which had just gotten a new collection at the time since it was previously 2 books, those books have been consistently the top selling books for nearly 25 years. Even as popular as Walking Dead is right now, I guarantee in 5 years time it will not be selling near as much as Watchmen. From everything I have read, it was considered a pretty big hit.
