Love and Rockets... where to start?

The first series is the Locas: Maggie, Hopey, and then later Ray stories by Jaime Hernandez and the reading order is:
Maggie the Mechanic, by Jamie Hernandez (Locas Book 1, from Volume I)
The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S., by Jamie Hernandez (Locas Book 2, from Volume I)
Perla la Loca, by Jamie Hernandez (Locas Book 3, from Volume I)
Penny Century, by Jamie Hernandez (Locas Book 4)
Esperanza, by Jamie Hernandez (Locas Book 5)

I have the two Locas Hardcovers but noticed that on the Fantagraphics "How-to-read" site they mention the hardcovers collect "most of the material." Anyone know what's missing?

Yesterday I started reading Heartbreak Soup (Palomar v. 1) and The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S. (Locas v. 2). About 70 pages into both at this point: trying to replicate the way fans read both series in the same comic I'm reading a Gilbert story then a Jamie story then back to Gilbert, ect.

I'm realy digging it and am convinced this is the correct way to read it!

I believe the more tangentially connected stories (not featuring the main cast) are dropped.
