Default Between The Pages: Nick Fury

Nice video detailing Nick Fury's evolution, all the way from the 60's to Samuel Jackson in the Avengers movie and Nick Fury Jr. in the 616.

    Warning spoilers from Battle Scars.

Definitely a cool vid to check out, especially if your new to the character.

Really glad marvel's going to start pushing Fury more in the comics, he's been absent in the 616 for a while, maybe that was because he was too busy kicking butt in the Cartoons and movies.

Thoughts on the future of Fury in the Marvel Universe. He may get his own movie in the near future.

Also if you have any criticism of what Marvel's been doing with Fury lets keep it as constructive criticism.

I read an interview with Tom Brevoort where he talks about the various reasons they decided to push Nick Fury Jr. I've never had a problem with Ultimate Nick, and thought it was a nice touch. The Ultimates issue where the joke about being played by famous actors is one of my favorite. I don't understand why having Ultimate Nick Fury basically be Samuel L. wasn't enough. I'm not happy with the idea of the movies dictating what happens in comics to this degree.

overall I thought marvel handled the transition nicely. They gave Fury Sr. a son, didn't just retcon him or anything like that so all the past stories and continuity is still intact.

And I just came back from a showing of the Avengers an hour or two ago, and I just loved Fury in that movie. Heck I've been a Fury fan since Spider-Man TAS love that the character is getting more exposure.

Fury sr already had a son. they gave him another son. why?

How does you liking Samuel L Jackson as Fury in the movie translate into you liking Marcus Johnson (who is very much not Samuel L Jackson's character)?

i'm trying to understand this from the perspective of the pro-Marcus crowd. to me it seems like you're seeing Marcus and the movie character as interchangeable. but i see it as the Ultimate Universe and movie characters being one-and-the-same. and neither of them are Nick Fury sr's child.

    Doesnt "niceless" mean.... not nice?

Anyway, the story in BS has him fighting Hydra as a CIA agent before joining SHIELD. That is a retcon.

He can grow into something similar very easy. Dude is a Ranger. Elite...it's probable that he's Delta Force. He's not the same exact character, but he can grow into that character pretty organically. He's not General Fury...he's a super agent. Like Jason Borne...only in the MU...who can grow into the movie character...or similar to it.

If Fury was a Ranger or Delta...they often work with the CIA...and that was not a retcon by this book.
That happened in Marvel Spotlight #31 in 1976.

People can only have one son or child? Most families have more than one.

I can see Marcus growing into that Fury role. He is still a new character. They have similar characteristics aside from looks, and marvel has already stated he will be appearing in a number of books. I don't see how you can ignore the fact that Marvel wants this character to function similar to movie Fury in the future. With the explosion of Nick Fury over the last few years, I can understand the wisdom of Marvel creating Marcus and giving Fury Sr. a son.

I see this as a young version of Nick Fury. That will grow into his movie and ultimate counterpart in time. i don't really see how they are necessarily drastically different. We don't know all of Ultimate Fury's past or movie Fury's past. This is the first time we've really gotten a young Nick fury since like the 60's. I'm looking forward to him popping up more in all of Marvel's projects in general.

I think your missing the point. I'm all for different incarnations of the character. I liked David Hassel Hoff Nick Fury, and the one who appeared in Spider-Man TAS and X-men Evolution and I like the newer Fury as well.

I love the super spy/super agent role he fills and I think marvel can do a lot more with this character than they have so far.

    typo.

I don't think he was CIA, I think he was working with the CIA agent, Marcus' mother, like Umbra stated earlier

Poor Mikel. Killed off just for Sam Jackson.
Also I hate that Battle Scars said that the infinity formula was wearing off. But in Fear Itself 7.1, he said his body now regenerates the the formula.

This thread isn't just about Marcus or 616 its the characters evolution, and basically everything Fury in general: marvel's future plans for the character etc.

he was killed off regardless. And I don't think Marvel had any plans for him really anyway.

not really. I thought he was kind o fcliche to be honest.

And with the original 616 Fury getting very little play the last few years, Mikel was almost guaranteed to not get any panel time.

Killing him off is about the same as having him float in limbo

The problem isnt being a CIA agent, that is known, the problem is fighting Hydra before being in SHIELD.
