Because I don't see introducing an alternate Earth storyline as a leaner, meaner universe.
They really should have just created a the new 52 as a whole new line, like the Marvel Ultimate universe. Half of the reboot status quos are establishing the editorial and head honchos favorites back in the forefront. For some its worked, Aquaman has NEVER been cooler. Animal Man. There are some GREAT books.

The nostalgia for Helena Wayne seems SO old. I'm 22, Huntress has ALWAYS been Helena B. and Babs was Oracle. Those reboot moves aren't really for my generation or younger then, it's deliberate bids for the 35 to 55 age group to come back to comics. I think that's a terrible marketing plan. Look at the money The Hunger Games movies made. TEENAGERS. Teenage girls. The younger generation can really create some amazing income. The fact they deliberately ignore that potential money making machine with their heros and heroines is astounding. NuBabs is NOT a character I don't think many teenage girls would want to read about right now.

Making Huntress Helena Wayne also replaces a heroine of Italian and Catholic upbringing, one of the only openly religious heroes, and replace her with the WASP Wayne. It's less diversity.

Personally I never thought in the case of Barbara, I never thought her to be the matronly 30 something both DC and shockingly enough Gail Simone touted her to be when responding to the reboot and the need for her to be deaged. She's a genius, she doesn't have to be that old to do amazing things. She hadn't been the 30 something politician for YEARS preboot and her age at taking up the Batgirl mantle was whiddled down to what 16?

I always put her around mid to late 20's, a 24-27 sorta deal to contrast to Dick Grayson's 24ish. Really not that old. I quite enjoyed her being a bit older than Dick. Now Dick's 21 and Babs is an unclear 21 or 22ish. It's really boring.

This new shocker, that even if she wasn't Huntress in the new universe, the fact a Helena B. the "mafia princess" existed and DIED is such a slap in the face to her fans. I was hoping for a Huntress vs. Huntress!

They could have at least kept her as a teacher at a school or something. Damian will eventually be shown going to some sort of school right? They could have easily had a one or two panel easter-egg by showing his teacher to be Helena B. Alive. Existing. But not Huntress.

The disrespect even in the face of the whole Batgirl and Stephanie/Cassandra blowup is AMAZING that they'd even pull that.

Not that there was much danger of me buying this book before, but man! They can't be sitting there going "how can we offend fans of female characters", can they?

Helena Wayne was my first introduction to the character and I loved her. Hated when she died but really liked how they brought the Huntress back as Helena Bertinelli who looked like the old one enough but was even more of a kick ass. I think its probably a good call also because...

Of this! One problem with that is it creates division. Some fans of Helena Bertinelli will not accept Helena Wayne of Earth 2 as the true Huntress and DC needs all fans of the Huntress to rally around this one. That's not to lable just that side because there exist some who felt the opposite and have never accepted Bertinelli. Of course I guess you could say no one side won. Now, its not what I would have preferred by a long shot but I've said before I don't like reading something as I would have wanted it. I'm open to the writers winning me over again. Or not.

Well, the book is closely tied to Earth 2. Maybe Levitz gave Robinson a call and asked for advice on what to do with a popular female character in the first issue of a new book.

They COULD have done an interesting story where Helena Bertinelli got swapped into Helena Wayne's world at the same time. Or sent to some other world. Even if they don't actually pick up on what Bertinelli is up to for a while, just knowing the story thread was out there would, I think, defuse a lot of the anger. And really, any fan of the Huntress who has been around for 20 years every reason to be angry.

It is a terrible marketing plan. It reeks of Dan Didio.
Also, Huntress in the JLU and The Brave and the Bold was Bertinelli, and decidedly NOT a daughter of Batman and Catwoman from another universe.

This is a poor decision in my eyes.

Its bad enough they are giving fans a crapfest called Batgirl but to kill Helena B that crosses the line. I hope Cass and Steph are ok.

    Damn.
I really enjoyed the Huntress mini, but between the shitty death of Bertinelli and the preview just being kinda bad, I don't think I'll be reading past the first issue.

And I really wanted to enjoy this, too. At least this lightens my pull list.

The faces/heads are really ugly. George Pérez has really lost his mojo. Not even gonna bother.

I dislike this. The DCNU only benefits legacy characters like the trinity, and writer's pets like Damian Wayne, and Superboy. Everything else is getting chewed up like a pedestrian in Prototype 2.

News flash: It wasn't just Barbara; all the bat-characters got de-aged.

You're wrong. This isn't the old 1970's version of the character anymore than it's the Berninelli version. This is a brand new character.

Well, I see that fandom is still functioning within normal parameters. As usual, we're ready to write something off before it ever appears.

Fandom doesn't like it when the characters they love are killed off screen?

    Shocking.

Damian didn't. Tim and Jason are more or less the same age. And the only character that got de-aged and is now less experienced than before is Babs.
