I agree that Godzilla is not science fiction. However, Godzilla is definitely sci-fi. I make a strong distinction between the two.

Yes, but I 'm not any more interested in pretending that I've seen many of those films (with a few such obvious exceptions as Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Island of Lost Souls, Dr. Cyclops & Things to Come ... & I suppose if you stretch the boundaries of sf a bit, The Devil Commands) than I am in lying about being well-read in Golden Age comics.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."

Rented it on VHS in probably the mid-'90s. Quite good. Hardly sf, though, in my book, but rather fantasy.

Surely not ... though the apparent fact that your'e posting from a planet on which towering gorillas & rampaging giant lizards shooting rays from their mouths are regarded as natural is intriguing, if somewhat frightening.

King Kong is a toss-up, I guess; a gorilla several stories tall isn't inherently sf, though the fact that he came from a "lost world" type setting with dinosaurs (IIRC; haven't seen the movie since I was a kid) & giant spiders & such might well qualify the flick.

The title character in Godzilla, though, is some sort of spawn of atomic testing, isn't he? (Or did he come from the earth's bowels after atomic blasts cracked them open? Haven't seen that one in decades.) Consequences of atomic testing=sf, at least at the time the movie was made.

Alien, for me is a great horror movie with a science fiction setting, rather than a great science fiction movie. And the Star Wars flicks are more science fantasies or romances than real science fiction.

Thinking about all those classic movies is sparking old memories. Back in the 60s after school, there was a TV program on CBC which aired either before or after "Music Hop" (originally hosted by Alex Trebek), where they would show part of a 'horror' movie. We had to keep tuning in to see the whole movie. I remember that's how I saw "The Invisible Man," "The Phantom of the Opera," and others.

Sadly yes and there is a heated debate about it. Its from a Kayne West song. He says that s**t cray. The debate which I've sadly seen in person and among my friends on Facebook is that cray is actually Kray and is refering to the Kray Twins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kray_twins I personally don't believe that Kayne West would write such a reference nor care who the Kray twins were. This is a hot button issue of my age group.

The Krays is also a pretty darn good movie, IIRC.

That last one is an amazing film, self-standing, yet chock-full of casual easter eggs for experienced science fiction film watchers. It raises tremendous bioethical questions. If anyone's concerned that Moon is too recent to be "classic," just put Godzilla (1954) in its place and I'll be fine.
Moon had a lot of great homages, but I'd definitely rank most of the films nodded to in Moon above Moon itself, especially 2001 and Solaris. I might choose Moon over Silent Running, though.

Renegade Soundwave's "Kray Twins" is a pretty darned good song. I'd link to the YouTube video but every browser I try right now takes forever to do anything (I swear to god, it's about like being back on dial-up), & I'm afraid I'd have a heart attack if I tried. Not to mentoin thie fact that this stupid machine won't keep Flash running to save its life, for which reason &/or others I haven't been able to get a decent response out of YouTube in about a year.

And people think comics fans don't have lives ...

It would also seem possible that listening to crap like Kanye West -- isn't he the cretin who threw a fit on national TV a few year ago because some girl won Best Video or something over some other girl in some spurious made-up awards show that would mean nothing to anyone with one iota of brain matter, anyway ... or was that some other moron who's so stupid his friends have to remind him to breathe & whom I wouldn't trust to bag groceries? -- is seriously injurious to the mind.

Or I would if it were an actual trademark and not just a schtick. If schtick infringement were a real thing, a lot of stand-up comedians would be doing hard time.
