I miss the Kents, too. To add a bit of insult to injury, I feel like Pa Kent's death had already been handled better in the first Superman film and Morrison's All-Star Superman. We've traded the dramatic punch of the heart attack for Pa Kent's sickbed and a throwaway line about helping the little guy.

I don't think Morrison paid out on the promise to make Superman an edgier idealist, with the end result being that I'm not sure what defines Superman from one issue to the next.

And I say this as someone who really enjoyed the first couple of issues of Action. I just don't think it panned out the way I had hoped or expected.

Look on the bright side...he might still have had a heart attack.

Well, we saw a much younger looking Pa Kent in his deathbed waxing poetic about the little guy.

What happened to the LEADER of the Justice League as well as the most physically powerful guy on the planet?
You know what? I know what you mean by that. In JL he has little to no lines and is really only seen as the end all be all for "the tank" on the team. Also don't get me started with the back and forth between Bruce and Hal.....it gets sorta annoying for the most part.

But with that all said.....I still like Superman in JL. I feel like he is the strong silent type but when he talks it's something important to the story or he's dropping some first hand experiences know how on the team (when he comments on how we shouldn't dismiss Green arrow because he's the "underdog" and Superman knows what it's like to be the underdog)

Superman is also the first person to point out that the para-demons whom were attacking were actually not just killing people but they were taking them somewhere. Batman then comments that Superman is right on this.

But in a fight he's the first guy on the line with the battle cry.

To me he seems to have taken on the role MM had on the old JL as the alien outsider helping his friends out.

Also if he has less to say then they can play up his super-senses more. By this I sorta mean what they are already doing (with him noticing this others do not) but now when he does it it won't seem like he's over speaking (a problem I thought the old Superman constantly had) because if he's the "first one to speak leader type" then when he goes to talk about something he analyzed right after he just got done giving a pep talk or whatever it could seem like "oh god who won't he shut up!" or "man Superman's a no it all"

I think making him out to be "mister wise alien farm boy monk" will make his words seem more precious and impactfull.

But all of this can only really go down if Johns is actually going in this direction, but he did actually say that MM wasn't on the team because Superman was more alien-like and more of an outsider.

But really that's just my 2 cents. What'd you think?

No solid direction for the Superman title is a high irritant right now.

    5) the messed up bangs when he's Clark. It's okay when Clark is a newbie upstart in ACTION, but you'd think he would start to look more professional in 5 years time, especially now that he's working for Perry White. We don't need to see him in fedoras and blue suits again, but for gods sake, comb your hair, C. K.

I think Action Comics has backed off on the more overt violence which is a good thing because I found it very problematic. The excuse that "well that's how it was in the Golden Age" falls really flat with me since the our culture in the 1930's in this country was much different. We had no Miranda Laws in place and police brutality was a serious problem. Therefore, behavior that may have been acceptable back in the 30's and 40's is no longer acceptable or justifiable to me now for Superman. I think we have evolved past that. AGain, I think the books have slowly backed off on the more overt violence (the reference to Superman breaking the man's ribs etc.); however, it's still a real problem for me.

The cocky, show-off behavior is also a problem for me. It may well be a front. It may well be a cocky kid who hasn't learn yet. However, it's still not something that is appealing to me.

All of that. I will add (which will most likely not be received well) that I don't think Morrison is right for the title. I just think he's better when he's able to work with high concept stuff. Give him New Gods (actually don't because then we get things like Darkseid IS the embodiment of evil) or make something new up for him. Maybe he woud've been better on Stormwatch I don't know. I feel like he shouldn't write tradional superhero books.

I dislike the look of the suit, but I like the idea of it.

I wish the were able to get Mark Waid to write Superman.

I'm still collecting and admittedly I'm a few months behind on reading the gigantic pile of comics I have waiting for me so hopefully some of that will change. But if it doesn't soon I'm afraid I will have to drop both Superman titles. Too many other good books coming out right now.

I think the creative teams didn't have much a direction. The first year of the main title was just aweful. 90s rejects coming in and trying to be cool. Lobdell's stuff isn't bad but there's room for improvement. I'm sure Diggle will be good but Daniel's artwork is painfully generic and Snyder's comments have been uninteresting. I'm afraid all this progress will vanish and they'll get him back with Lois and the Daily Planet. Quite frankly that would be terrible. The relationship in Justice League is painful right now.

I'm actually enjoying the nu-52 Superman for the most part, but there's one thing that just doesn't sit well with me: The Hulking Heap of Horsecrap that is the Superman-Military dynamic. General Ross... I mean, Lane, fears the Hul... I mean, Superman, and Betty... I mean, Lois Lane, the general's daughter, falls for him and tries to get involved against her father's better judgment. It's just so wrong on so many levels. Military chasing the Monster doesn't work with Superman - it simply does not. A one shot I could conceive, but it seems like we're in this for the long run.

Therefore, one can but conclude that kryptonite radiation will eventually be composed of gamma rays and general Lane will become Superman Red in the future. You heard it here first, folks.

I don't know how far they're going to go with it now, actually. To date the Superman/General Lane dynamic actually had more play pre-reboot, during the New Krypton storyline. The dynamic, not to mention General Lane himself hasn't been used in any capacity in the New 52 since the Perez arc, though.

What I always hoped would happen though was that, kinda like Flashpoint, Lane would find himself actually warm up to and care for Superman as a person despite his reservations, and make him an ally of Superman's within the military.

I take it you guys didn't read Action Comics #1-#8 and Action Comics Annual #1, besides the Perez arc?

I don't know what his story is all about. In New-52 Action # 1 I got the hang that his story is about being the champion of the oppressed but it suddenly changed to sci-fi/magic adventures so I felt there was something missing in between transition. Superman comics was an episode of transition stories since Superman wasn't yet clearly defined in Action (at least for me). It was Lobdell who's doing some world/personality-building now so I'm still waiting until the H'el on Earth arc is finished. I liked the Luthor story (with a little more improvement in Superman's personality in the future) since I got an intelligent Superman. If this portrayal of Superman continues (with the nobility and slight arrogance) I think the storyline that I'll just be waiting for is what does Superman represent in the New-52. Is it power? Is it nobility? Or is it something along the lines of Action Comics 775.

Well, in the Perez arc, while they clearly don't like each other (but when you start a working relationship by putting the other on an electric chair and try to fry him, I guess it's harder to be buddies), they where sort of working together in the 2nd issue. Of course, when Superman is replaced by an evil alien and starts to play it Authority style, he tries to attack him, but that's common sense at this point.
But honestly, the whole "military doesn't like Superman" goes back to Birthright, and has been seen since in the Geoff Johns run, Earth One, and the new Man of Steel.
What always makes me laugh, though, is how they're always employing or studying notorious bad guys (Metallo in Geoff Johns run,Parasite in Earth One, Kryptonite Man on the Annual), to counter the possibility that the good guy may not be quite as good as expected. I mean, it's a bit like saying "this Staline fellow is starting to worries me, I will support this Hitler guy just so I could use him against the other in case said other tries to attack me". I mean, sure that's what happened in real life, but when did that kind of thinking ever end well?
But, considering how the CIA used that tactic again and again, despite always having unwanted side effects, I guess it's actually pretty realistic.
