This comic's paper stock was flimsy as hell, what did they make this issue out of tissue paper?
Pardon my digital French... but this is absolute %&^* garbage.
PULL: Hawkeye, Star Wars, Daredevil, Batman, Secret Avengers
The best compliment I can say for this series is that it is a must read for the Avengers Movie. It's like a forerunner to where Samuel L Jackson's character came from, and gives us a very touching background to the origin of Phil Coulson, who spoilers:end of spoilers. All we need is an indication of the existence of the Committee also in the movie, and we make the connection complete.
died tragically in the Avengers movie
We also get an indication of Nick Fury's mortality, but that can be easily wiped out if Nick Jnr gives senior a blood transfusion.
Battle Scars? I didn't think it fell flat. I was a severe critic of this concept that was handed down from the top, but after reading the last issue, and after watching the Avengers movie, I was stoked to read this last issue in collaboration, because the two Fury's in the book and the one in the movie, hit home nicely the way it fit. I now see where Coulson comes into the movie, and why an African American Nick Fury is in the movies. It's the best kept secret of the symbiotic mix of movies and comics being created and published at the same time, with no time delays. Well done Marvel and Marvel Productions.
I really enjoyed the series. Everything, from art to story, it was just a fun, enjoyable story to me. I cannot understand the hate associated to a minority character. So there's an illegitimate son of Nick Fury? Big deal. He didn't replace the original. He's still there and he'll probably always be here, because the way his character is, he's died a few times and always come back. Reading threads like this just make me think that anytime creators do anything different, they'll just get blasted for it non-stop. To me, we got another interesting minority character who will hopefully do some great things and amount to something other than as someone's sidekick. To me, that's pretty good.
Today, I make no demands... no threats! But, one day, I shall voice demands -- and all shall obey them!
I forgot just who here made the predection, that marvel would have EVERYTHING happen in the last issue, in this manner. I think most fans could see it coming a mile away. I'm just glad that I didn't waste my money on more then the first issue! What next, A black kingpin, just because he was so in the dd movie? Back in the late 1990s, marvel tried to kill fury off. now, they can do so again, he isn't needed, and just will confuse new readers.I expect past apperences to soon also have him shown as always having been black.Way back in 1963, gabe Jones, one of his howlers, was shown from at least the second issue to be black. But he was killed off, he wasnt needed any more.Man, marvel sure is getting lame in it's old age.The disney age of marvel,is slowly showing itself,as a different marvel.
You've missed the point a bit. No one is complaining about his race. No one is really complaining about him being an illegitmate son of Nick Fury. The issue is how how crappy Marvel told this story. They already have a Sam Jackson Nick Fury in the Ultimate Universe, which used to be the "cinematic" Marvel U. They forced a Sam Jackson Nick Fury into the Marvel U in the lamest way possible. They had the audacity to say "your name was always Nick Fury, and this is what you will go by." I think if they would have started introducing Marcus at the time of the first Iron Man movie, this whole thing might have gone a little smoother. He's not Nick Fury to me. He's Marcus Johnson.
You would have to imagine it as Marvel editorial had always wanted a black Nick Fury and a Phil Coulson in the last 5 years in the comics. They put them in the movies first, and then published them a lot later than they intended, in Battle Scars. That's how I rationalize it. What you get is the foreshadowing in the movies, of the publishing appearance of Black Nick and Coulson in the books, and their movie debut in Avengers, at the same time. A conjunction of new appearances, in both media, happening together.
