Anyone can pick them up and read them, but that doesn't mean they're going to be able to create a hit movie idea right away. If it were that easy, anyone could do it, no?
Whedon and crew have a HUGE hit with Avengers. Wonderful. Doesn't change history; Whedon flopped with WW. His fault, Silver's fault, WB fault, whatever, I'm sure there was lots of blame to go around. None of us were there and will likely never know all the details. We just know that for whatever reason it didn't work. And not all of Whedon's ideas do work - Dollhouse, anyone?
As for Avengers, I had a great time. Still, I do have a nitpick, and I'm pretty sure this one is Whedon (though I could be wrong, obviously). Thor's "he's adopted" comment was funny, but it didn't fit Thor. In my experience, Whedon seems to want to give nearly every character the same sense of humor. It's didn't really fit with the rest of Thor's portrayal in the movie.
