Aww man, this issue was just lousy.

I felt like I was reading something from the early 90's. There was just nothing in the storytelling at all that screamed "buy the next issue!" to me. The ending, with the mountain blowing up, was so, so lame. 'Superlame', in fact.

And the artwork... I really love Merino, whether he's pencilling or inking, but even he couldn't turn Jurgens' pencils and uninspired panel layouts into anything interesting.

I honestly can't think of a reason to keep reading this. I've still got Action for my Superman reading, so I certainly don't need to pick this one up too. I guess I'll flick through #9 on the stands next month and see if it can't change my mind.

I'd really urge you try and give it one more month, to see what they cook up without editorial, because we know for a fact this plot was handed down to them. But yeah, this is exactly why I felt this was so misplaced. Some were on the fence already, I can't understand at all why this mandate was forced now instead of at least letting the new team get a few solid issues with their own ideas down first. Or just introduce Helspont elsewhere entirely if he had to absolutely be brought in now. At least then if readers still weren't feeling it, they'd know the overall direction just wasn't for them.

Problem is, I actually didn't mind the Helspont angle. But it was all done in such a plodding cookie-cutter fashion, both in writing and artwork. It's the same sort of boring junk I saw from Jurgens in JLI #1, so I'm not sure if he's even capable of better.

I didn't like this issue as much as the previous two. It didn't seem as...cinematic, somehow. And there was too much dialog. Sometimes you can put in a lot of words and make it work, but in this case most of the verbiage seemed pointless. And Cheyne-Stokes respiration? (Had to look that one up on Wikipedia.) An interesting detail, but Helspont is an alien with a head made out of fire! Why would he even need to breathe? Of course he's fooling you, Superman.

On the other hand, the supporting cast is looking more and more interesting. Good to see a Lucy who isn't killing people for the military. And it's kind of neat to think of Clark and Jimmy playing video games. Even if that was part of the hallucination, it seemed to fit with their new relationship.

In terms of Superman, these two statements seem diametrically opposed...

I'm glad this already ended, I didn't like Helspont that much especially because it was an editorial mandate.

This was one of the best issues of Superman I've read in a long time, I love what they're doing with the character in the new DC universe and for the first time since the early 90's I actually give a hoot about the character. The beginning of the issue was great with the dream Clark was having, and Superman's interactions leading into his throw down with Helspont was brilliant, and what a fight it was! Overall awesome stuff in my opinion, keep it up DC!

Sorry, I should probably clarify what I meant - I was talking 90's 'style' as opposed to 'quality'. I quite enjoyed the Superman books in the 90's as well - it was my reintroduction to DC, in fact.

I'd be surprised if there weren't plenty more that thought the same as us about this issue, dude.

I was around 10 years ago....and 20 years ago....and 30 years ago..... been reading Superman and Action since 1978. The suit is fine with me so nothing to be vocal about.

Skipped from Superman 6 straight to issue 9 and just went and picked up issues 7 and 8 this weekend and I was.......disappointed. In my opinion it was a very boring two issue arc and nowhere as good as this title should be.
