I don't really know what to think of this issue. On one hand, it's sort of well done. The possibilities for the supporting cast are starting to show, I actually enjoy Hellspont old school villainism (although I'm not quite sure to take him too seriously), and I like how he doesn't seem interested in Earth at all and to be a bablant liar. The fight was okay, maybe not quite as impressive as it should be. Superman managed to find a common ground between the newer badas incarnation, and the classic one, and that's a good point.
Now, the whole thing felt....pointless. I mean, that's it? They fight, Hellspont disapeaer, "Ho well, I'm sure we will meet again", end of story?
As for next issue.....To be honest, this "Masochist" person seems to be such a lame villain I'm kinda scared of what's going to happen. But wait and see.

Masochist might surprise us, but I can't help but raise my eyebrow at the fact that Jurgens and Giffen were so thrilled to ditch Helspont for this.

I never understood the jumping to negative conclusions about her in the first place to be honest. Its not the coolest name in the world, but there's nothing wrong with her look, and beyond those basic things, there's not much else we know for a fact.

Though the theory I glean off the small things we know is that hurting her has some inherent benefit to her. If she can't be touched, according to the solicit, and a masochist takes pleasure from pain, to me that suggests something good coming from her being injured, in that maybe she gets stronger for every hit she takes, or maybe the blows she takes don't hurt her at all rather hurt the one attacking. Something like that would be a pretty nifty ability if I'm anywhere near the right track.

I'm ready to receive new villains for Superman.

The last time I got excited for a new villain, was when they introduced RIOT.

Ah, ok. Forgot about Helspont's lair. Thanks.

That was my feeling as well, I enjoy Hellspont as he has that James Bond villain feel down pat but other than that it didn't do a whole lot for me. I think it would have been a whole lot better if it showed more of the illusion than we got as the fragmented bit just seemed confusing rather than menacing.

Mainly because it doesn't really matter in the end. He still has the shield and cape and that's really what makes a Superman costume. Little details like red briefs on the outside are trivial at best.

Did anyone else start humming the old Wild C.A.T.S. theme song to him/herself while previewing this page?

Wildcats, wildcats! Wildcats, Wildcats! We're heroes! Not zeros!~

Hellspont as a major-league new Earth villain. Whoever thought we'd see the day?

I felt the same way at the end of the story. Of course my negative Morrison bent immediately thought that he said something that prevented Giffin/Jurgens from actually taking the story anywhere....but I am trying to "cool my jets" as it were and give the benefit of the doubt. Just based on the set up from issue 7, I did expect this story to go somewhere and you are right, it didn't really.

Still liked it! The Gil Kane influence on Dan Jurgens is really starting to show. This version of Superman by Jurgens is different, he's a lot leaner, maybe a little taller.

One of the things that I felt missing from the story was, back in the day at least, when a villain went toe to toe with your hero, you would find out stuff about him, like how his powers worked or what drove him and this issue we got a display of Helsponts powers but really not much in the way of how they worked. The face blast he gave Superman was pretty powerful but what was that any way?

Looking forward to the next issue. I also noticed that in the latest solicits, Keith Giffen's names not in the writing credits...again I wonder why.....

Which no one seems to want to acknowledge. I can think of five Superman villains that could be brought back and with some tweaking, be made very relevant and cool.

I've stated this before, but I think Giffen is taking time off to write the SUperman Family crossover that is supposed to happen this summer.

Coolness...something to look forward to! I hope he draws some of it too!

I don't understand the reasoning of bringing in second rate heroes and villains created by Jim Lee. Talk about using your new power to make your creations actually mean something.

Superman and the DC Universe in general have plenty of great heroes and villains not being used instead we get %^&*storm characters.

I don't know, but Jim might be getting some kind of commission on any WildStorm character that DC uses. So its really convenient for him to be in charge and tell his creative people to use these characters because it puts green in his pocket.

I asked a couple of times on line here if Jim Lee was getting some kind of payment for this... but no one has replied.
