I really liked Ellis and early Carey.
Why aren't you reading Winter Soldier? You should be!
Millar, Carey, Ellis, Bendis (his Ultimate Spider-Man work only) and Hickman
in no particular order,
millar, bendis, ellis, vaughan, hickman and possibly lindelof.
Ellis.
He just GOT what the point of the Ultimate Universe was! Every Ultimate book he has written has shot to the top of my favourites. The Ultimate Galactus trilogy is probably the best event the UU has been put through too. Also HE OBEYED CONTINUITY DAMNIT!

I'm kind of an Ultimate Universe newbie. Read a smattering of FF (by Ellis, I think), some Iron Man (by Card), Ultimate Human (Ellis), and most recently Ultimate Ultimates (Hickman).
By a wide margin, Hickman is my favorite. What it's done with Reed...I was leery at first when I skimmed Ultimate Fallout, though it might be such a bitter take on Reed it would make me question his 616 stories, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. What he's done is amazing!
And also he was wearing the wrong suit.
2000-2006: Golden Age of the UU
2007-2009: Age of Loebotomy
2009-2011: Post-Ultimatum Era
2011-????: Silver Age of the UU
To be honest, I hated the UU until Hickman came aboard, so he's at the top for me. Although, I loved the Ultimate Galactus Trilogy. And USM has been pretty interesting ever since Miles was introduced. So: Hickman, Ellis, Bendis.
................. Other than New Ultimates (ZARDA RULES) and mabye Ultimate X

The thing for me is that Bendis has never been an "Ultimate Universe" writer since he's never really written the "big picture" (outside of maybe Doomsday). He's more of a Spider-Man writer in my opinion, even though his Spider-Man stories happen to take place in the Ultimate Universe.
It's probably gotta be Hickman, Millar, Ellis.
Marriage Era Spidey bashers are shameful opportunists (Like you REALLY didn't enjoy a single Spidey comic in 20 years)
Conversely, BND haters REALLY need to get over their continuity elitism already
Tough call. But I have to disagree with Loeb or Millar (still sore about them killing all those superheroes and Millar having the ADACITY to ask to KILL OFF Peter!). However, I did like Bendis's early work in the Ultimate Spider-Man series. His Peter was so connectable and I grew up with him. Then, he goes and kills him off nearly eleven years later. Although, I have to say that the good stories with Peter were gone after Ultimatum. It seemed more like a "Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends" thing than anything else and it became so...lame. That was until DoSM when it was good again...until the end. Then, it went right back to the stale old style of Ultimate Spider-Man when Miles was introduced. So I have to go with...Bendis (pre-relaunch).
Life has its own share of twists and turns. Pick friends who are willing to keep you on the roller coaster.
