But the death of a major hero has become a laughable triviality. Why bother when the fans start taking bets immediately how long it is until they are not dead again. For a marvel major character death is no more serous than a head cold.

The phoenix force makes it's way to earth after b!tch slapping Thor, takes Howard the Duck as it's vessel. So much power filling such a ridiculous character smashes a hole in reality and suddenly you have the Marvel Universe spilling into the DC universe. HUGE all out brawl between the 2, like seriously life or death stuff here, characters actually fighting for their lives. at the end, when nearly every soul is extinguished on both sides... wait for it...wait for it...RESET OF INFINITE(2) COMPANIES. Both companies return to the status quo of when their sh!t didn't stink, deaths erased resurrections forgotten and powers returned. That would be awesome and unexpected.

The Phoenix Force returns and doesn't need a vessel because it's Jean Grey returning to Earth to take back her man! She incinerates Scott for being a two-timing Magneto Jr. Cable and Bishop show up and BOTH shoot Hope in the face because she's gone crazy mimicking the PF. Insert Giant Crazy Battle™ during which all of the Avengers AND X-Men get toasted and the only real super hero team left is the Great Lakes Avengers who subsequently drop the Great Lakes moniker. Awesome sauce!

My best case scenário:

Cyclops is proven right, reignites the mutant gene, and realizing he has gone too far quits the X-Men, disappearing for some time. A mutant council is formed to rule Utopia.
For being the two-timming traitor he is, Wolverine is banished or dies for good in AvsX (the second is wishful thinking, but the first is actually logical and may result in good stories).
Cap realizes he was wrong, and that he handled things teribly. Disbands all Avengers teams, clearing the board for the next Avengers writer to come in and do pretty much whatever he wants to.

Snarky answer:
The Phoenix Force arrives on Earth and merges with its always intended true host: Mickey Mouse, who goes on to destroy the whole Marvel Universe, eventually merging what is left with the Disney World. The Avengers now operate out of Ducksville.

Was surprised how many voted for Bishop, like myself. This character needs to be redeemed (even if it means pulling him from an earlier point in the timestream, before the chase through the future where Mike pointed out he became irredeemable). And if he's coming back through time, bring Synch, Skin, Banshee, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler with him.

Serious prediction for how things will go:

After the Avengers win the initial skirmish and take out some mutants, the X-Men get a tame Phoenix to use. The host is Emma or maybe even Scott. Cyclops forgets all about saving mutantkind and goes after vengeance. Avengers and other heroes start dropping like flies. Some of them are comatose, some are hopelessly brain damaged, some are maimed, some are depowered. Probably a few are dead. Cap gets desperate and realizes Phoenix is his only hope too. He tries to find Scarlet Witch. She either won't help or can't. Maybe she's afraid of what she could do. Maybe she thinks it's inevitable.

Hope returns from K'un-Lun having mastered some technique which gives her full control over Phoenix. She beats the X-Phoenix and then looses the Phoenix Force on the world. Cue the 'soft reboot,' where everything is put back together but only a few people remember what happened. Scott is deeply shaken and very humbled.. but so is Cap.

Deadpool gets the Phoenix Force. 'Nuff said.
