Joe Average doesn't need to know who Thanos is at this point, if he's the villain in the sequel they'll be brought up to speed then.
That's my feeling. People were puzzled about why Samuel L. Jackson just wanders in at the end of Iron Man. Or that Hammer at the end of Iron Man 2. Or the Cube in Thor.

Even if you don't know who Thanos is, he registers as a bad guy from that scene.

I'm not saying the movie is like UFC. But the quote was that it wasn't remotely related. Just saying, it was remotely related.

Not quite the same thing. Because bare minimum, it was seeing a bald Jules from Pulp Fiction in Tony's house.

On the other hand, Mjolnir in IM2 and the Cosmic Cube in Thor meant less than nothing.

The teasers at the end credits are usually to get people talking and them trying to find out more. What is shield ? What is that object ? Who is that guy ? etc etc.

Every other movies , most people stand up from their seats and start walking out of the theatre once the movie finishes and the end credit starts up. In the avengers and probably most other marvel movies , the audience are still sitting in their seats and watching the screen when the movie ends and the end credit starts , very few people actually walk out.

Looking at one of the comments on that link...Coulson dated a cellist. Wanda Maximoff is a cellist (I honestly did not know that until that comment).

I figured we'd see Coulson again as an LMD, though that might be a bit creepy ("We need reinforcements...send in the Coulsons!"). But now I'm thinking (based on the comment and who the cellist could be in the Marvel U), he could be back as Vision, using Coulson's appearance and brainwaves for personality. Which is...slightly less creepy. But I think it would be cool. I don't think we've seen the last of Clark Gregg in the Marvel movies.
I have this idea for the next X-teme Games Gold Medal Event--Bear Tickling. Its like Bull riding but more X-treme! You are timed on how long you can tickle a bear before he attacks you.

It's also to get the internets and the facebooks and the twitters running. If you didn't know who Thanos was last week, there's a damn good chance you know now.

    It could be awesome.

'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

That would be a very interesting way to take it.

You could tell by the way the scene was framed and the reaction from Tony that Coulson's death was supposed to be this big deal, but I just didn't feel it. He was a fun character and he had some great lines but I had no more of an emotional connection to him than I did for random shield agent #11. He had more screen time than your average back ground agent but there wasn't enough real characterization for him that made his death seem that meaningful.
For me Coulson was an important character because of:

    1. his appearance in Thor. I found it very interesting how he dealed with the whole situation. He did not go all goverment on Thor and rest, but he let them do their thing to see what happens. He also did not behave like an goverment asshole and was not full of selfimportance, but was always polite and understanding. If I had a run with a goverment special organisation I would like the people in charge to be like Coulson.
    2. "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's hammer". This one-shot was funny and badass.

And the villain reveal? I think he's just too obscure to make the scene work. For a teaser to work it needs to contain an element or question from the movie you just saw that was really burning a hole in your mind to cause excitement for the next installment and introducing a brand new villain that most of the audience isn't aware of with out any exposition just doesn't achieve that end.
Heck even for someone who knew who the villain was like me the scene wasn't that exciting as he just doesn't do anything for me as a character. There are a half a dozen other villains I'd rather see than him...most of them not available due rights issues.

Still, it was a total riot, I loved the Hulk and the overall team chemistry and I'd definitely buy ticket for the sequel.

Really? I thought it was a great call back to IM 1 and how reacts to somone he thinks is a better person then he is Sacrafices himself.

Hmmm yeah...I don't know if I can agree with Coulson's death not being made a big deal. I think the performances from the actors is what pretty much sold it for me. For example, Fury looks damn close to crying when he stands up after he "calls it". Tony's "We are not soldiers" line spoke a lot for me. Cap was obviously touched enough to go rope Tony back in on his own volition.

Also, in the scene where they're all conversing after they capture Loki, I never hear the dialogue because everyone's always laughing at the "He's adopted" line, but last night I finally got to hear what Tony is telling Coulson. He told him he was going to fly him up to Portland to spend some time with the cellist, and "Never let love die, man" or something like that. So from there you know how much Tony cared about Coulson, and obviously his death affected him. Especially when he feigns ignorance when Cap asks him if he was married. "There was a cellist...I think." Oh Tony...we know you knew even if you didn't want us to know you knew...

And Thor had just met the guy and he was pretty angry.

    Also..."His name was Phil."

That was what really did it. The Avengers were gonna take down the Chitauri to save the planet, but they were gonna kick Loki's ass for Phil Coulson. Every time I've seen the movie, that line gets a big cheer.

And having seen what can happen when trying to weaponize the Hulk tech (the Abomination) Banner still will fight for control of the tech, and will still seek out a cure for himself. He just also will do what he can to help out when the situation calls for it.

It's one of about 3 or 4 moments in the movie that equal instant goosebumps for me.
