Based on various bits of interviews and commentary from people who were your age and older when they first saw it in 77, it was a very big deal. It was the talk of parties during the summer months and at school in the fall. People on the street of all ages wanted to see it or had seen it many times. Those who were younger and grew up with it, well, they are the ones who help make up today's fanbase that you see at the conventions and have all kinds of merchandise. Were the ones who sat in line for weeks on end to be the first one in the theater for the prequels.
Thing is, back in Star Wars' days i don't think people were as cynical. It's not "cool" to keep harping on about movies these days i don't think.
Just saw it, and it was totally awesome. I don't think any Marvel movie after Iron Man was particularly good, but this one made me feel like a little kid again. It was just so satisfying to see all that buildup lead to such an amazing conclusion. There were too many great moments and lines to count, and the action was top notch. And that post-credits scene... Goosebumps, man.

Just awesome.
I just love the way all the characters are kept involved, they all get their moments and they are all utterly badass. The characterisation was great. Loki was a great villain - more so than in Thor's own film. Hulk is played and portrayed brilliantly. All the Avengers are. I'm personally very impressed with the way Hawkeye and Black Widow more than hold their own.
The action is BEYOND spectacular. The early scenes are great, the final battle is beyond epic, the most awesome superhero battle ever. Never seen anything like it.
Awesome film. Great Whedonesque humour. The multiple characters are used well and none are wasted. The action is truly epic. This is pretty much the ultimate superhero movie.
virtue untested is innocence
For those who have seen it: spoilers:end of spoilers
Any idea who the masked alien guy was supposed to be? I kept thinking it's Annihilus, but I think the rights to him belong to Fox, since he's primarily a FF villain.
Ok so since there is only one week until the movie comes out I'm trying not to look at a lot of reviews/forums, but I do have one question. Have any reviews mentioned how good the 3-D is? I want to go see it at the imax but they only have it in 3D and I don't want to see it there if the 3d is going to be crap.
Bra'tac: Now we die.
O'Neill: Well, that's a bad plan.
O'Neill: I've spent my whole life sticking it to the man.
Jackson: Well now you will be the man.
O'Neill: I don't think I can be the man.
I saw it in 3D. Didn't add much, didn't take much away. This is coming from a guy who wears glasses as is so wearing two glasses at once is a bit uncomfortable...
That being said: wow. Word do not do this film justice. It is everything you want and more. I can count at least 2-3 times where I imagined something happening in my anticipation, said to myself "Nah, they won't do that" and then...they did it. Oh God did they do it.
I'll answer any questions, as honestly as I can, granted anyone has any left.
My one gripe:
*slight spoiler*
Hulk catching Iron Man should not have been in the trailer. Much more dramatic scene in the movie that was kinda ruined.
Star Wars was also a film that nobody really cared about. When they made it, it wasn't a big-budget movie by even 70s standards. The crew made fun of the silly Chewbacca costumes and robots. It didn't have an big premeire, they just shoved it out into the theaters. You didn't have big, huge fantasy films. It was the first one. It was the first movie of its kind. Not an book/comic book adaption either. It was a different time, too. I guess Star Wars was so big it was in the theaters for almost a year or something like that.
Avengers looks very cool, though. I'm not saying it's bad. It doesn't look bad at all.
Plus, Star Wars came out in a post-war era where the economy was bad and gas prices were high. Boy, am I glad that's over...
Oh no. :)
