I tend to agree. The character wasn't created to be dark and violent; that's why she isn't the best fit for that type of story (though I do think it can work, I like "The Hiketeia" for example). Nevertheless, the industry, as a whole (at least the direct US Market), doesn't seem to do all that well with the type of stories WW used to be.
And if this is a (debatable) fact...then wot's wrong in trying a different approach? It may not cater to everyone's taste, obviously, but at least they are trying to find something that works.

And by general consensus, so far, it does.
