Still, Magma and Sunspot are badly and rarely used.

Maybe she also sees something in the younger man that has been buried within his older, more grizzled counterpart. Nate's not so cuddly, but he's certainly not as jaded or battle hardened as Cable yet. Only a few people have ever really gotten to Cable's chewy center, so to speak.

Besides, sexual attraction is just sexual attraction. Nobody ever said that it's a relationship. The gal's not a nun, right? Pretty sure that the X-Men don't take a vow of celibacy. Just because most of the X-Men aren't getting any action doesn't mean that Dani can't.

Yeah, but doesn't that say more about Sam? Instead of leaning on Dani when it came to his PTSD, he turned tail and ran. Doug is way more mentally f***ed than Sam and even he stuck with the team and sought help. In the end, the short lived Samni pairing probably isn't that significant. Fans are probably wishing and hoping desperately that all those years of competing for leadership was nothing more than sexual tension. I'm not so sure.

He's improving. Doug was always a dork. After he died and came back during Necrosha, he briefly became an unlikely bad-ass. Ever since, writers have been struggling to get him back into character, opting instead to saddle him with meaningless techno babble. The Paradise Island arc looks to have been a turning point for him. He's not back to normal just yet, but he's getting there. He's a dork again, but he's currently more Sheldon from Big Bang Theory than David from WarGames.

Maybe it's just me, but I think that everybody gets to a point where they wonder where their mojo has gone or if they've slowed down a bit. The New Mutants aren't kids anymore. Bobby isn't 13 like he was in the GN. He's an adult in his very early 20s. You have to think that he's maybe wondering if something is wrong with him since Amara's not responding. Has he lost a step? Is he doing something wrong? Did a sudden change of cologne make him repugnant? Bobby's probably just going through one of those moments of self-doubt. It's all a part of growing up. You never really grow out of that sort of self-examination. You just learn to better handle it. Bobby will be fine.

I think that it's DnA more than the book itself. Ironically, for guys who have done these big cosmic stories, they seem to have a little trouble getting a handle on the team dynamic for this X-team. They're great with those smaller intimate moments, but it gets away from them a bit when things get bigger. Not a lot, but to the point of the tail sometimes wagging the dog. I also don't think that they have the best handle on the New Mutants continuity. They miss some of the finer points every now and then. Zeb Wells was much better at that, having crafted much richer stories from that lore.

What I WILL give them credit for is for making Warlock more recognizable and true to type. It's not as simple as adding "self this" and "self friend that" to his dialog. Like Doug, he's getting closer to what fans recognize. He's still not nearly as cartoony as I'd prefer, but it's a step.
You make very compelling arguments and I have to agree on most of your points. I still believe it was a mistep to resurrect Doug, especially since there has been no reaction from Wolfsbane at all. What a wasted opportunity. I just don't think Doug really adds anything positive to the team. You're right about Sam, it speaks volumes more about how forgettable he is when not around. Was not a fan of the Sam/Dani pairing to begin with (I think he would be more interesting paired with Rogue) so I am not bothered too much. I understand about Bobby and his unrequited love for Amara - I do wish we could get some more forward development with him though.

    1. "Let's revisit Paradise Island and Bird Brain." - Nice idea, but they really don't do much with Bird Brain and wrap up the Paradise Island arc in a very hasty deus ex machina sort of way.
    2. "Let's make them fight an evil heavy metal band." - Nice idea, but couldn't they give these bad guys some personalities? Superhero books suffer most when the enemies are boring or the heroes are free of inner conflict. That heavy metal band was so bland and generic that it should've been and could've been a much better one issue story.
    3. "Let's make Doug the master of ALL languages, not just spoken" - Nice idea, but shouldn't that make him more adept of a fighter, especially since Wells laid the foundation for that? Shouldn't it make him LESS awkward and dorky since he can read everybody's signals?
    4. "Hell puppy!" Did Warlock eat him or something? - Did he get forgotten like Franklin Richards' teleporting dog?
    5. "The curious, snoopy neighbor across the street" - We're waiting. What's up with that dude?
    6. "The New Mutants are Cyclops' cleanup team" - Okay. You recovered Nate and Blink. Is Cyclops that tidy that he doesn't make that many messes that need cleaning up?

Good ideas. Minimal followup. It's amazing to me that they're actually going through the Amara/Mephisto story. THAT should be interesting, unless they somehow let it fizzle. (Although I can't see how dating the devil will result in anything but a very dramatic breakup.)

I'd like to see them do a couple of things with this book now that Nate and Blink are there. Threnody. I'm pretty sure that she's out there somewhere. Bringing her back in to complicate Nate's life and relationship with Dani could be interesting. Madelyne Pryor (Red Queen). With Nate on the team, the story practically writes itself. Could be epic. Blink VS Blink! Another good pairing if they can ever get the Exiles' Clarice off her butt and back into continuity. Plus, whose side would Nate chose? Does he go with friend and teammate Blink or his AoA compatriot Blink?

    1. You are exactly right.
    2. Right again. Would've been better off with a done-in-one
    3. Yes.
    4. I am sure it will be brought up in the Exiled crossover
    5. Indeed.
    6. Yes, where is the clean-up?

Would love a follow up for Threnody. Been way too long. Maybe too long for them to bring her back? Blink bothers me because she basically got a personality transplant. I think she should still be a little morose instead of the happy-go-lucky chick we have instead. Just not convinced yet.

The whole issue felt like Blink drugs the reader too. Like the first few pages I was like "eeeh." and then by the end I was like "weeeee"

I'm not sure what it says about the book as a whole, but it was nice to see them laughing and having fun, I guess.

I want this book to focus more on Magma's love life.

Enh, sort of. I'm going from memory, but it was a pretty chaste, peck-on-the-lips type of relationship, if even that. At the time, Warlock's status quo was that he had Warlock's memories and body but Doug's human emotions and reactions -- he still thought of himself as Warlock, but a much more human 'lock.

I seem to remember at one point Wolfsbane joined up with them and Hope was a little jealous, but got over it. The "dating" was more on the level of smitten, grade-school-crush stuff.

And then Hope, Chi-Chee, and Psi-mon were never, ever seen again.

This issue made me wish Blink had just stayed dead. She annoyed the hell out of me this issue.

I remember it was sophomore year of college, so... 1999? 2000? Right around then. Only 9 total issues.

Man I love this series. DnA have a great handle on the characters. If only they paced it better.

I'm getting pretty nervous about it getting cancelled. Hopefully they'll give another creative team a crack at it first, or do some silly stunt to give it a sales boost.

It just seems that ever DnA arc has been an issue longer than it needed to be.
And I know that if/when this book goes, the characters will just fade away, and that's what worries me. Damn it there are still awesome stories to be told!
