Agreed, though The Hulk. hes lost his popularity in recent decades but The Hulk is up there among older folks. I can't argue hes as popular as Spider-Man or anything, but the Hulk is surprisingly popular among groups you'd not think about!
Maybe that will change after The Avengers though hah we will see!

The grandma test is because what did you watch as kid,Older folk know about these characters because that was popular when they were kids.I don't believe average guy is going out website but average kid is watching Avenger cartoon or spiderman cartoon,I believe the average woman is watching ET or Extra and seeing Chris hemsworth and Chris Evans,I believe average adult has seen the Avenger commercial couple times, has seen Ad in a book, has seen a ad on the bus stop.Simple put i believe more Kids and teens higher percentage of kids and teens know more Avengers than grandma. They are more Kids that know than grandma.
Grandma didn;t have the internet,MP3 players,Iphones and cable TV. 100 million dollar marketing in restaurants, stores and magazines. They are more people on the planet today with more access hence a character today can become instantly popular.Grandama didn't have facebook and youtube.Who is Travyon martin and George zimmerman,Rebecca Black,The Homeless Man with the Golden Voice ,etc. Video go viral and thousands of people know about them.
Kids today watch tons of TV,They are lot of kids today more than grandmas, quite few grandmas in the ground no longer around.I am far more confident they most kids in elementary know of the avengers in some form and this age that is alot more people than the older generation
The X-Men are still huge, and they have a very loyal and passionate fanbase. My problem with their growth during the 80s and 90s is that it seemed to come at the expense of the rest of the Marvel Universe. I'm an X-Men fan, but I am also a Marvel fan, and I want everyone to be successful. These past few years have been great for the Avengers, as far as growth and popularity are concerned. I honestly think we're at a tipping point, and I think this movie is going to push it in favor of the Avengers. This movie is going to be huge, and it's going to cement their position as the next great movie franchise.
I honestly don't see the X-Men achieving that level of cinematic success.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."
Avengers rising. X-Men falling. Even with their recent relaunch the X-Men have been steadily declining. Both teams have moved away from what was once their core theme but the Avengers are resonating more with fans. The X-Men just seem full of gloom and doom all the time. I wish it wasn't like that. I want the X-Men to return to what they once were rather than the extremists they are now.
The grandma test is rather grim tho', don't you think? Because according to that test, there is only 3 fictional characters in all of comic-dom, heck, perhaps all of fantastical fiction:
Superman, Batman, ( notice how these are not marvel-characters) and POSSIBLY, but not always, Spider-man.
No Wonder Woman, no Green Lantern, no Captain America, no Iron Man.
3 characters. 3 franchises, no more, no less.
No, because your grandmother knows who Wonder Woman is, even if she knows nothing about it.
your grandmother knows who Captain America is, and Your grandmother knows Iron Man and Green Lantern thanks to big budget movies.
Admittedly it varies from grandmother to grandmother. But the goal of the grandma test is just to get away from this... get away from these people, get away from people who describe "Deadpool" or "Cable" as 'almost as popular as batman' and things like that. Its a loose guideline to put you in the right place of mind.

I think the individual Avenger heroes, or more specifically, the Big 3 and the Hulk, are more recognizable than any of the X-men except Wolverine, but as a group, the X-men are more known and popular than the Avengers, and probably will be for a while, even after the movie.
That's right! Al Gore invented the internet, let's all go kick his ass!

I also think whats helped the Avengers is that They were all individual big budget films being brought together in a team movie, this is something we have not seen. While when the X-men came out comic movies were not big and there fore came out as a team movie....if they had started out as a wolverine movie, a storm movie, a cyclops and Jean Grey movie and then brought them together in an X-men movie that would of been just as big as the Avengers seems like it will be. What I will say is back then if an avengers movie came out first I think it would of floped bad, but since the x-men and spiderman came out and built up an aduiance that started to really like the comic genre it allowed for marvel to make the individual characters into there own movie and then bring them together in avengers. I really believe the X-Men opened the door for the Avengers to pass them in popularity because according to non comic readers there the "new" hot thing.
