I'm still waiting for the new reprint of his Stormwatch run, but from what I've looked at, he's actually surprised me with his character work there. I'm not sure exactly how to put this, but I always felt that if he ever does write about superheroes, he prefers writing about heroes that are kind of edgy or rockstar-ish. His superhero books will always have a cyberpunky feel to it and he's always showing how badass his characters are. Don't know how much that would fit the empathetic pantheon type of team like JLA.

Johnathan Hickman would be my #1, #2, and #3-#8 choice.
Also would like to see Cornell get a shot at it. And #10 choice would probably have to be Hickman.

I ALSO wouldn't mind giving it to someone completely out of left field, someone doing smaller, independent comics that we may not be aware of, and just let him or her do whatever they want.

And the type of story that JLA calls for is exactly the type of story at which Ellis excels; energetic, fast paced action with witty character banter and cutting edge sci fi threats.

Warren Ellis' work, I think, tends to be overrated when you have people comparing it to the complexities and the daring of a Morrison or Moore or Gaiman or Milligan, but he's got an exceptionally well honed craft and he's very, very good at what he does.
I generally agree with this, but I think that some of Ellis' work can be rated up there with some of the other names that you mention; Stormwatch/The Authority and Planetary instantly come to mind as greatly executed superhero books with great scope, grand spectacle, deep characters and true (if somewhat unrestrained) heroism.

Heck, his recent run on Secret Avengers with six one-shot issues had pretty much everything I could want of a currently published big two superhero team book.

Definitely agreed on Cornell, Ellis, and Hickman.

Oh, I just had a wacky thought--what about Brian K. Vaughn? That's probably one of those things that would NEVER happen, but it would be interesting to give him at least a couple of years on the book and give him the permission to go as nuts as he'd like.

Well, I'm just picturing an off-beat, nuts, original, wonderfully drawn Justice League title done by Milligan/Allred or Hine/Kane, Milligan/Kane, Hine/Allred, and loving it.

I would'nt like the JL being written by an author that already has a good established work in the franchise like Morrison, Waid or Kelly because they probably have told the stories that they wanted to tell and also because they would probably fall for the infamous curse of the second run. I don't even want to talk about the guys who did a mediocre to bad job like Meltzer or Robinson.

Also, I see that some people want Kurt Busiek to write the JL and frankly I don't understand why. None of his DC work has been that appealing to me, it always looked too bland or fails to deliver on its premise. I think he's better suited for the Mavel Universe, although I don't find his work there that great either.

I don't have a preference for any author writing JL, I just hope that is a talented writer with an intriguing premise.

And please, please get Warren Ellis far away from my DC comics.
Comic Books are fun, Comic Book fans not so much.

Brian K. Vaughn writes some of the best beginnings and middle's of all time. His endings always make me want to punch something.

Tomasi, with art by Cameron Stewart. I'd drool. More than usual.
I would like to say for the record that this is the FIRST TIME I've withheld dong when someone was so desperately asking for some.

Aside from the great scope, those things IMO only apply to his Stormwatch.
