Honestly - I say this as a Gambit fan - I think that Remy does need to be rebuilt at this point, and Marvel is using this solo series as a way to do so, in order to make him a compelling character again. Asmus seems to be aware of this need, and is making the wise decision to foreground some aspects of his mythos and minimize others.
So, yes, he's downplaying Rogue, despite her being a huge part of his history, because a) that has been all that has defined him in Legacy to his detriment and b) it's impossible to run a solo series where the main character is Rogue's sad ex-boyfriend. I shipped Romy hard-core, and I want to see them apart at the moment, so they can both be developed as individual characters. In the future, once they've been reestablished, they can come back together again.
Yes, he's downplaying Deathbit, because, frankly, it was an idea with a potential that was wasted and has been used to sideline the character. X-Force has obliquely resolved it, and we can all move on with huge amounts of relief. I can guarantee that 99% of Gambit fans do not give a crap about Deathbit at this point, and never want to see it again.
Gambit is a character with massive crossover potential. If Marvel markets the book right, it could garner attention from people who like Catwoman, Grifter (who is the Gambit rip-off par excellence), Thief of Thieves, even the terrible Jack of Fables. So, I like that they're thinking about new fans.
