Default Avengers Academy should be so much better than it is.

To me Avengers Academy is one of the most frustrating books out there. I loved the first arc but since then I just don't know what has happened. Over all I would say the characters are interesting but it is just missing something. To Top it all off Gage writes sooooo much the book has become a chore to get through. I feel like I have liked Gage on other things but this isn't working out for me. I am going to try the AVX arc as I am all in for that event but we'll see after that.

    Thoughts?

    Really?

Right now, I think it's one of the best books Marvel is putting out.

Liked it for the first dozen or so issues but around the time of the Fear Itself tie ins it just went pretty steadily down hill. By issue 23 I just could not justify buying it anymore. Half of it is the mediocre to terrible art but Gage had not been winning me over for some time. Came back to check out the "Runaways" issues which were okay but nothing spectacular just done well enough to justify my purchase.

As of now Lightspeed is the only terribly likeable character in the entire student cast. I would Say that I like X-23 but she's not been written very well from what I've read. Really wish her ongoing was not canned.

But yeah, it could be much better. Gage is a good writer, Avengers Academy just isn't terribly good right now.

I still like the book a lot. It seemed to lag a little during the Hybrid arc, but that's probably just my hangup about seeing the 'possible future' story. X-men beat that horse to death for me long ago.

But the Runaways story was great. My only complaint for that one is that it seemed rushed. Almost like Gage had to hurry up and get it done before AvX hit.

It's suffered from being bounced around between plots for a few issues now, rather than finding it's own ground. I loved the Runaways issues, and I actually think that Gage is going to do well with the next few issues, even though it's bouncing off a tie-in again.

I'm still devoted to the book, but I think the things that would make me like it more are:
    A) Don't do long arcs. Keep it episodic and punchy with different scenarios.
    B) Focus on the cast more. Future Reptil was a pretty big misstep because we spent so much time with a character who ultimately disappeared from the book. I don't care about the future so much as it just seems like alternative costumes of the main cast. I just wished we got more issues discovering how the cast got their powers. Is Mettle a robot? Who is Striker's dad? Just do things that are specific with cast you got.
    C) A better artist. I know this one is kinda hurtful, but I think the book needs a solid artist.
    D) Get the kids off campus. I was hoping moving out west would get the cast more accustom to what's out there, not just the mansion.
    E) Now that I think about, we haven't seen a classroom since Fear Itself started...

QUOTED FOR TRUTH!!! I will be trying the next issue, just for the New X-men kids... but I am not holding my breadth for anything spectacular. I just find all the Academy kids soooooooooooooooo boring!!! Fingers cross Gage writes a great Dust.

My biggest problem with this series have been the central cast of kids.

Mettle's o.k. but I don't care about the rest of them. I do like the new additions of Julie Power and the White Tiger.

I'm more intersted in the faculty and the background kids (who last I checked had bigger fanbases than the main cast).

I'd rather the stories focus on Spider Girl, Thunderstrike, Power Man and the background guys like Butterball.

I think the only way to improve it is... DOUBLE SHIP IT! Seriously, this is the best title Marvel has, and I cannot get enough of it.

I'm of the opposite opinion. It was dragging before Fear Itself, but is on fire since the crossover. And I found the Runaways arc to be the best Marvel story this year so far.

Oh come now. You pick them to hold it against? All of the other superheroes are idiotic, reactionary twits too.

And the art has been fabulous, too.

Two of the last three issues were not as appealing to me. But I don't think its time to throw in the towel. This book has been a pleasant surprise and I am hoping that it gets back on track after/during AvX.

Gage can write and the first twenty two issues are evidence of that....I look forward to the next issue.

I love this book. I remember other books the day they come out or a little later, but I'm always waiting for my favorite books: AA and BoP!

i think the book's been losing steam since the move to the west coast. they added all these new kids to the roster and i have no idea who any of them are. well, i know the new Power Man (Power Kid), but he doesn't appear at all... i think he's been in, like, three panels so far and had maybe 1 line. also, half the cast is suddenly gay... meh. very much on the verge of dropping this now.

Gage IS a good writer, i loved this book before all the recent changes. i don't know what happened. maybe he has too much on his plate now? he is, after all, currently writing X-Men Legacy and Angel & Faith in addition to AA.
