Default Comic Creators Collab'ing or just being lazy? Avenging Spider-Man #6

Over at IGN they did an interview with Mark Waid talking about how he divied up the writing duties with Greg Rucka. He said Rucka did the middle portion and he did the bookends. So...is that really a collab or just 2 writers sharing the duties of filling 20 pages?

Also anyone who read The Buy Pile will note Hannibal Tabu found the middle portion of the book sagging and lacking. Ouch, sorry Rucka.

I know they developed ideas together but...I thought maybe they'd work more hand in hand on this.

Well thats the way they divided up the actual writing duties but I would imagine each section was subject to the other creators comments. For example Mark Waid would make suggestions as as to how Greg writes Daredevil and Spider-man dialogue for his section of the book and vice versa for the Punisher. Seems the only practical way to write the book otherwise they would be trading panels or pages.

I really don't think anybody puts stock in Hannibal Tabu's opinions save for Hannibal Tabu. The Buy Pile has always been a complete and utter joke.

And really....it's still a collab, I think, since just because they independently scripted separate portions of the book doesn't mean that they didn't collab on the plot for the entire issue.

The interview says thta they worked on the outline of the issue (the general plot) together and even though the scripting was separate, they still made notes on each others scripts and tweaked them accordingly.

I figure that's kind of the norm for co-writing gigs. Hell, a lot of the time, co-writing isn't much more than the bigger name guy just throwing out some general story ideas, the smaller name guy writing the entire script sort of based on thsoe ideas, and then getting the final okay from his co-writer. (see: Ed Brubaker on Cap and Bucky's later issues or Bill Willingham on Jack of Fables' later issues)

I don't know if how they collaborated or whether they did or not is that important. What matters is the result. I enjoyed AvSM #6 and I didn't know about the Waid->Rucka->Waid transition until reading your thread, so I'd consider that a success.
His memory's gone! Or...is it? It's not hard to fake amnesia! The Goblin is capable of anything!

    Fair comment, agree with that.

Still counts as a collaboration, two writers working on the same overall story.

I felt the same way.. if they wrote different parts of the story, I didnt notice. I thought it was a good read.

It was a solid read, proper characterizations. Frank seemed menacing, Matt was cool and cunning while Spidey's clowning was cute and on the mark. It read consistent throughout, so excellent pairing of creators here. And the Chechetto art was awesome as ever. His Punisher is great and does DD justice as well. This was a fun and action packed ride. Will be following this crossover.
