Default Will they ever reveal the origins of the powers of the Avengers Academy students?

Such LAZY writing, they should have just made them all genetic mutants, instead of the Marvel standard of ambiguous mutates, whose origins are almost always never revealed and if they are, are so contrived as to be nonsense. Now that Veil has been written out of the regular cast, we'll never know in her case. What a gyp!

Reptil origin has already been told since before the series started, Stryker, appearently, can be considered a mutant, Finess's abilities might be inherited, the others have been hinted as results of Osborn's experiments, but the full story still has to be told. I'd say it's being slowly revealed, and see no problem with this.

Wait . . . giving them a generic "they're mutants" origin would be the less lazy option?

At this rate, yeah. Because at least then they're a minority metaphor to add to their character dynamic, instead of "boom! super hero!...but no motivation."

I'm really hoping Gage does explain them to us. Enough about Future Reptil, let's explore the characters we have!

I suppose it's a fair question, but it really isn't something that is hugely important to me, personally.
How a super powered character gets to be super-powered is almost always a teeth-clenchingly awful fudge of pseudo-science, unlikely coincidence and even less likely motivation.
It's usually the bit I want to get through quickly so I can just suspend common-sense and enjoy whatever the fiction is about.
And "mutant" really is the laziest of the lazy shortcuts, as somebody already pointed out.
It's the exact equivalent of answering the question "why and how do they have super powers?" with: "because they do".
It's not an explanation it's an excuse.
But it would not matter to me if they all were mutants, or super-skrull sleeper agents, because it's an entertaining, well written, well-drawn comic.

I think mutant works just fine as an origin for some. It explains where their powers came from without the millionth accident, secret plot etc, makes them part of a minority metaphor that can tell plenty of stories and allows the writers to focus more on characterization in place of motivation.

That's kind of the way I see it too, but I do find the pseudo-science interesting. All superpower origins tend to be little different from the "they're mutants" origin. One is really not an lazier than the others. There are a lot of really brilliant and stupefying origins of all types of characters. How many versions of the "tripped and fell into some kind of magic chemical" are we going to see? That's no different than being born with powers. That's also not a complete backstory: what happened next is where it gets interesting... or not.

I brought this up when i was reading the book in the early issues and the explanation was that they origins were going to be part of some storyline. Two years have passed and not only do we still have no origins but some of cast is gone? I wouldnt call that lazy writing because that implies that they are trying i just think that it really have never even been put up, it's just no writing.

And no Osborn didnt give them powers, they all developed powers on their own and they came to Osborn to be cured but he didnt do that. He was doing something else that was also not explained. I guess the reason for that is to have the group hate Osborn for that early story when they went to visit the Raft.

Hazmat's origin has been hinted at being because of her parents work at Roxxan. Stryker's was hinted at because of having a special father (I think, the details are fuzzy), while Finesse's are due to her father's.

That just leaves Mettle and Veil, and really how their powers were revealed did remind me of mutant reveals more than super hero.

wait what? making them mutants wouldn't be the lazy way? Stan Lee invented mutants because he was too lazy to come up with explanations. Just because it hasn't been revealed doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

uhg this post is so stupid I can't tell if its sarcasm or not. And yes I am sure you will never see Veil again. Damn you GAGE!

I thought it was already confirmed that the kids aren't mutants. I don't have my trades with me to check but I do recall it being mentioned that they were checked for the mutant gene and found none of them had it.

They aren't mutants its been confirmed by Gage if not instory, Though admittedly most of their origins are still mysterious. Though as pointed out Finesse has inherited her abilities (most likely) from the Task Master, Reptil's origins were already explored and Hazmat's have been hinted at.
