    Default Good Doom Patrol Stories?

I've always been interested in the Doom Patrol. I've tried to find some stories with them in it, but I haven't been able to really find one that I could jump right into. I want to know if I should try reading the rest of Giffen's run from 2009. I read the first issue and I was kind of confused because it looked like we were already in the middle of the action, so I didn't follow it through. Should I take it back up? And if so, does it come in TPB form? Also, if there are any other Doom Patrol runs or stories you guys recommend, I'm open to it.

The most important Doom Patrol run is the Grant Morrison run.

You can pick the whole thing up in TPB form, and it's amazing.

Start there and just get book 2, 3, etc.

Giffen's Doom Patrol uses a number of Morrison's concepts and characters, so you would do well to start with Morrison.

If you're up for some Silver Age stories, I'd pick up the Doom Patrol Showcases. Thoese stories really stand the test of time as Drake's stories always had a lot weird elements and Bruno Premiani's art was sublime.

The Morrison-Case is run is essential. This is the peak of the DP. Also do yourself a favor and pick up Flex Mentallo, Man of Muscle Mystery.

John Arcudi and Tan Eng Huat's run is really good and completely underrated.

The Giffen run takes a few issues to find its feet, but once it gets past the Blackest Night crossover issues, it becomes a much better book, evolving some of Morrison's concepts in ways that make sense.

Grant Morrison's, Rachel Pollack's, and Giffen's take on DP, is all you need.

definitely Grant's run. one of my favorite comics ever.

Giffen's run was great too. he found a way to incorporate the whole Doom Patrol mythos but still kept the classic vibe. he also played up the dysfunctional family angle, which was great. they really are a super screwed up Fantastic Four.

and of course there's the Arnold Drake Silver Age stories where it all began. one of my favorites is a backup story called "Robotman Unchained". basically Robotman's tragic origin story.

Those Drake/Premiani comics have something most pre-Steranko comics just don't have. I get people raving about the Lee/Kirby FFs or the Ditko/Lee Dr Stranges, but I think the Drake/Premiani are right up there with them as the best of the Silver Age.

Well, my thing is a bit off because I've never read the Drake/Premiani DP run (just Morrison and on) or any Silver/Gold age stories come to think of it...

I really need to check the Drake/Premiani run.

I felt Rachel Pollack's run did not work at all; tried much too hard to be Morrison's Doom Patrol but didn't have it in the least.

The Grant Morrison run is probably the all-time classic, and the Drake/Premiani original holds up surprisingly well (the reveal of Negative Man without the bandages is still creepy today). My favourite though is the John Arcudi run...even moreso than Giffen, Arcudi's continuity makes direct references to the outcome of the Morrison/Pollack era and there are some genuinely surprising twists.

Avoid, avoid, avoid John Byrne's reboot, which spawned from a story arc in JLA.

It's good stuff. I don't go for a lot of Silver Age stuff, but there's a certain "offness" to the Drake/Premiani that just draws me in. If you're a Mike Allred fan, for example, you should love this run, because it's clear that Mike took so much of his inspiration for Madman from Premiani's work on the title. For a '60s DC title, it's almost unparalleled, although the Aragones/O'Neill/Cardy Bat Lash run is still my favorite.

First few issues yeah but then she picked it up and got a voice of her own.

The Arcudi run is so underrated. Arcudi has always had a skewed perspective on the superhero genre, something he honed to a point with BPRD and a god somewhere, but his Doom Patrol pushed the idea of a superhero team in a lot of weird directions. I think it kinda hurt that Milligan and Allred were pushing it a little bit further in X-Force/X-Statix at the time, but that incarnation of DP was a really solid book. Tan Eng Huat was absolutely killing it on art, and when your fill-ins are Rick Geary and the late, great Seth Fisher, you know you're doing something right.
