You don't think the early comic book companies often tended to be basically little more than mob fronts?

I'm not aware that it's really even in dispute among those with even a slight acquaintance (which is certainly all I lay claim to) with the industry's beginnings.

Guess that doesn't include everybody, though.

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

I've heard it claimed that DC was a mob front, but I don't put credence in rumors without evidence. Still, the check was written March 1st, 1938 which was actually a month before Action 1 was published. At that part Superman certainly wasn't worth killing over. Hell, for all they knew he could have ended up being a flop.

I thought everyone knew the mob employed precogs.

Or maybe I'm confusing "reality" with Philip K. Dick's oeuvre again. I hate it when that happens.

Always wondered why Americans spell it check...I spell it cheque

Although if I'm being written a 'check' I don't care once I can cash it..

Never really studied the matter, but I presume that's one of the British spellings that, IIRC, Noah Webster changed just, I guess, because he could. See also, of course, kerb, gaol, tyre & probably a whole bunch of others that apparently y'all use that we don't. At least "check" & "color" are shorter; the American spellings of the others aren't.

At least we spell the words "bloody" and "wanker" the same.

Comic books in general were a new media that could have just as easily failed to catch on. Nobody would have cried over National/DC losing a bunch of money on the venture.
