I'm maybe stretching the definition a little bit of storyline/event, but no more than a few of the previous entries I think. So my pick is Roy Thomas' Avengers #52-71 (plus Avengers Special #2), which I consider to be the pinnacle of Silver Age superheroics. This 20 issue run consists of pretty much one classic story after another:

#52 - First appearance of Grim Reaper, Black Panther joins the team
#53 - X-Men crossover
#54-55 - classic Masters of Evil story, first appearance of Ultron
#56 + Special #2 - classic alternate universe / Scarlet Centurion story
#57-58 - classic origin and first appearance of Vision storyline
#59-60 - classic first Yellowjacket, wedding of Hank and Jan
#61-62 - nice one off stories
#63-65 - the Clint Barton trilogy where we first learn Hawkeye's name and history
#66-68 - classic Ultron story, first appearance adamantium, art by BWS
#69-71 - classic Kang story, first appearance of the Invaders, first Grandmaster, Black Knight joins the team

A run that for my money is unmatched in superhero comics.

Ostrander/Yale/McDonnell/Kesel/Snyder/Miehm/Isherwood Suicide Squad from DC. No one has even come close to creating a series as good from start to finish. The art is fitting in each issue and the stories were almost prophetic in terms of world events. Rucka came close with his Checkmate series, but no other Suicide Squad even compares to Ostrander's Suicide Squad.

Baron and Rude's Nexus from the black and white Capital issues to about issue 55 and in various little places during the Dark Horse era were easily the greatest continuous super hero story in my time. THe series had it all: a compelling tortured hero, jubilant sidekicks, secondary characters with their own motivations, a hot spy posing as reporters turned love interest, aliens named Mezz and GIz, Fuero monitoring all communication, and of course Dave. Rude's art was gorgeous but also had a sense of whimsy or fun. The villains were horrible, there was political satire, philosphical moralizing, action, and fantastic comedy. THe ultimate modern representation of a writer and artist at the top of their games creating something surprisngly enduring. I named my son Horatio in honor of this book.

If I may humbly submit two nominations:

1) Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross -- Really nails the importance and role of Superman in the pantheon of superheroes (both in-story, and in real life, love the dynamic between Superman and Batman, amazing art from Alex Ross, and at the end leaves you feeling inspired, hopeful, and uplifted.

2) Wolverine limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller -- The definitive Wolverine story, IMO. Really fleshes him out as a character and goes beyond the simple bezerker caricature. Also responsible for one of the best lines in comics, "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn't very nice."

I had been considering Fables as well, but personally I would have specified #1-75. The series is still good, but I think the original epic contains the best stuff and hasn't yet been matched by the follow-up stories. But, that's just my opinion.
