I contributed six entries, each one selected to provide the kind of balance I was advocating. Should I have dominated the process and made 30 or 40? *That* would've been unfair.
Sorry, amigo, but I don't think it reflects that much at all (I would point out a dozen or so examples but I'm not out to insult anyone). Like I said, as a list of favorites, it's a fine list but I don't think we should pretend it's something it's not. Okay? The list may not come close to accurately reflectin the Top 100 quality and/or important comics, but I think it does reflect our best effort to compile such a list, not just a simple blurring of what we like with what we consider quality.

I can see where the Tacoma Terror is coming from here, but of course it's a fine line one way or the other. Where does "a list of favorites" stop & "a very good place to start for those wondering what we're all about" start?
The concept is by definition so ambiguous & subjective that I don't know that any real clarity is possible without (god forbid) the equivalent of the convening of the framers of the Constitution or something.

As I once wrote in so many words response to a skeptical post by the cynical & hard-hearted Cei-U! ...
DEAR MODERATOR: I am 53 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Brother Power the Geek #3.
"Rob Allen says, 'If you see it in the Classic Comics Forum it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Brother Power the Geek #3?
"Cei-U!
"TACOMA, WASH."
Cei-U!, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Cei-U!, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Cei-U!, there is a Brother Power the Geek #3. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Brother Power the Geek #3. It would be as dreary as if there were no Cei-U!s. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Brother Power the Geek #! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get Rob Allen to hire men to watch in all the huckster rooms at big conventions to find Brother Power the Geek #3, but even if they did not find Brother Power the Geek #3 in a box of back issues, what would that prove? Nobody sees Brother Power the Geek #3, but that is no sign that there is no Brother Power the Geek #3. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see ethical corporate higher-ups at Marvel or DC dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Cei-U!, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Brother Power the Geek #3! Thank God! it exists, and it exists forever. A thousand years from now, Cei-U!, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, it will continue to make glad the heart of fandom.

I think it would be cooler if rather than voting on what should be on or off the list, we just continue with listing our favorites. Let this list stand as a guide to what people here consider good comics rather than any sort of critical list of what's considered the best. Because if nothing else, this has been a lot of fun, and I think adding to the list is going to be a lot more fun than voting against things, even if there's quite a few things I personally don't feel should be on a list of "best comics".

thinking about manga...Lone Wolf & Cub should have most certainly made the list, alas.
And not thinking about manga (of which I've read roughly zero, except for a couple of horror collections by, I think, Hideshi Hino), the early, pre-reprint eras of Creepy & Eerie belong as well. In the grand scheme of such things, 100 is a very, very small number, as I'm sure we all realize.

1. Each poster can either give a +1 or a -1 to an item on the list
2. Honor system -- don't vote for your own suggestion or against something you haven't read at least most of the way through
3. No explanations. I think that prevents this from becoming personal or heated. A -1 simply means you don't feel this book is cream of the crop material, not that you dislike it or think the person who suggested it has bad taste.
4. You may only vote once every two hours
All books start with a +3 score. Once a book hits +0, it's off the list. We stop when we've narrowed the list to 25.

I like descriptions of the above as "essential" or "recommended".
"Favorite" makes more sense for individuals than groups. "Best" is too unclear a term. "Important" is best decided by other means.
Is Usagi Yojimbo one of the best comics ever? I dunno; define best.
Is it one of the most influential? Not so much. One of the most important? I dunno. Maybe. Is it one of those series that everybody should read? Most definitely. And lists which include Usagi Yojimbo are the lists I care about.
