Hello fellas,
After a long hiatus, I have returned. It is good to be back. With that, a new topic:
Loyalty vs. Principles
Which should take precedence? Is one more important than the other? If so, why?
The context behind the question - I had some friends. One that I knew for almost 10 years. We were really great friends, but maybe not the closest of friends. Maybe this is a factor that will play into what comes next. Anyways, without getting into too much details, the two of us had a falling out.
Now, the fall out is over the matter of principles. In my eyes, certain aspects of friendship should come before anything. If those aspects are not honored, I feel as though the friendship is moot. In the end, it becomes a matter of respect. If your friend cannot abide by certain views that are important, then they cannot be real friends.
But then, there's also the matter of loyalty. You did not become friends in the first place without something important and common to bring you together. The fact that a friendship lasts a while is based on those fundamental qualities that may sometimes be inexplicable. No matter the distance or time, those fundamental traits must still exist. Are those traits not worth looking back on? To be cited as reasons to remain friends?
Just to be absolutely up front, I chose principles over loyalty. I felt they were more important in the long run. To use a quote from a movie..."If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."
Discuss.

As someone whose had few friends in his life, and has no real ones to speak of at the moment, I believe friends are too valuable a commodity to be tossed aside on a whim.
Principles are important, but ending a friendship over a disagreement is petty and insane. Only major betrayals should end a genuine friendship.
virtue untested is innocence
I'm in the same boat, but I look at it differently. I've had few friends, and currently almost none. But I'm okay. I have a loving lady, who I consider my "best friend," but overall, I'm too selfish to be a good friend.
I figure most of my old friends are really better off without me, and I'm not too bummed that we've grown apart. I still keep a few good aquaintences, and am not against the idea of making new friends, but I'm very cautious and cynical about the idea.
But no matter what, principle should come first. Good friends should understand that while principles should not be set in stone, they should be respected.
