Oscar winner Ben Kingsley is in final negotiations to play a villain in Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 3," though exactly which bad guy he'll portray on the big screen remains unknown.

I know how you feel. I was completely thrown off when they had regular-sized John Rhys-Davies play Gimli the dwarf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, or Orlando Bloom to play Legolas when he clearly isn't an elf. Made those movies complete crap, IMHO.

By using the name "Mandarin", you almost have to address his ethnicity, but I agree that it should be downplayed.

Mandarin also means a figure of authority. He doesn't have to be of any descent to have the name.

It would seem kind of strange if it was the Mandarin. Shane Black didn't sound like he wanted to use him, and called the character a racist caricature. Maybe Kingsley will be a Fu Manchu style Mandarin.

The only people who focused on Elba's race were uptight comic nerds and racist extremists. The vast majority of people couldn't have cared less, as evidenced by Thor's solid box office performance and generally good reviews. In every way that mattered it was a nonissue.
