THis would make me feel, as Larry David would say, "Prettay, Prettay good."
Kingsley is hardly crap. Have you honestly read any stories with Phil as Hobgoblin; any of the Kingsley Hobgoblin stories? Phil as the Hobgoblin, now there's some modern day crap for you.

Really looking forward to the day Kingsley returns and shoves that flaming sword up Phil's ass.
Urich is an infantile imbecile compared to Roderick's mastermind cunning.
I'm beginning to think that Hell is a comic book forum.

Boy I love the threads where the same 5-6 Roderick Kingsley fans conglomerate and basically xerox each other's posts about how much Phil is teh sucks and how boy-golly awesome it'll be to have Roddie come back. Insert multiple uses of the words "pretender", "flaming sword" and "baddest fashion designer on the block!".
Personally, I obviously don't care for Roderick Kingsley. He had been gone from the comics for how long - a decade almost? Then again, I started reading in the mid-90s where the only Goblins on the block was Harry as GG II and Macendale/Demo-Goblin. Heh, Demo-Goblin.
I find Phil's position as a dark mirror to Peter really interesting. It's fun to see a character from a similar background wind up on the other side of the tracks and I hope this story is continued on a more personal level for a while yet. Also, the fact this version of the Hobgoblin has distanced itself away from the design and tools of the alpha Green Goblin is a positive also.
Ha!
And then we have those of you who love this umpteenth attempt at a dark mirror of Peter Parker and find it insanely entertaining for some reason; because that hasn't been done to death before or anything. And Phil is so gosh-darned golly cool, getting his ass handed to him at every turn from everyone and their mother, including Hercules, Arana and Spider-Randy Robertson, being the Kingpin's bitch, having the Human Fly melt your arm (another lame-o, yet not so lame as he did manage to beat Phil, too), etc. And more power to you if you can stomach his childish and pathetic dialogue: "I brought pie!". His motivation for all this crap? A shallow, annoying blonde who barely even noticed him.
Then again, growing up, all you had was Harry as Green Goblin II, Macendale, and Demogoblin. I almost pity you, especially if you haven't sought out past issues with Roderick as the Hobgoblin or Norman as Green Goblin before he came back during the Clone Saga.

If we're being adamant about what is on the page, Kingsley got decapitated by Phil.
So, I guess Human Fly is cooler than both of them.
I know Kevin Nichols through a guy that knows a gal. Small world!
If nihilism didn't take some delight in destruction one might suspect nihilists were an unnaturally morbid sort.

Au contraire, nobody will dispute that it has been done before, but the fact is that each character devised as a dark reflection of Spider-Man has always emphasized different aspects. Venom was the physical representation of a dark mirror, Morbius and Lizard an intellectual representation where their scientific curiousities got the better of them, Kaine of a Peter with his humanity stripped away, so on and so forth. Here we have somebody from the same general roots who tried the hero thing but fell off the tracks, more a "with great power comes more opportunity" than anything. The potential is actually great, and nothing you could do with the old Hobgoblin. So unless you're actually going to commit to the argument that Phil Urich is an Eddie Brock knock-off or something, which: be my guest.
Call me crazy, but a character's power levels have nothing to do with my interest in them. I don't measure what I like reading by the number of "feats" they accomplish and I actually do pity anybody that does. For all of Phil's defeats, he cut off Kingsley's head, right? Right? :DAnd Phil is so gosh-darned golly cool, getting his ass handed to him at every turn from everyone and their mother, including Hercules, Arana and Spider-Randy Robertson, being the Kingpin's bitch, having the Human Fly melt your arm (another lame-o, yet not so lame as he did manage to beat Phil, too), etc. And more power to you if you can stomach his childish and pathetic dialogue: "I brought pie!". Oh I'd pity me too, the 90s were generally terrible, even though Bagley rocked it. But don't you worry about me Mr. Billium sir, never said I didn't read back later. Then again, growing up, all you had was Harry as Green Goblin II, Macendale, and Demogoblin. It's too bad they had to go this route with Phil at the expense of Kingsley. So what, his one claim to fame now is beheading Kingsley (which, who knows really, they left some holes in that story on purpose, methinks). That's what makes him a badass?
Doesn't make sense that he can take out someone experienced like Kingsley and falter at taking out foes like Arana and Human Fly. One of the many things that makes him suck. Only legacy he's adding to now is the legacy of sucky goblins started by Macendale.
Well duh, he's the scene stealing villain these past two years. Though I confess, Venom #17 was Phil's best showing as the Hobgoblin. I just wish other writers wrote him like that to begin with instead of getting utterly overwhelmed and taken out like a punk. However, I kind of wish we see Phil work with Lady Bullseye or Typhoid Mary. Imagine the banter.
Still, Billium 3 does raise a good point. Until we see that head of Roddy's on the bookshelf or more evidence then the Roddy fans will continue to say he's alive and Phil's but a dupe. You even have to admit it does seem a bit fishy that Slott just dropped everything completely of Roddy's fate after the decap, given we know who this is and what he does best. That's the one thing I wish Kingpin was more weary about and keeping an eye on Phil just in case of that scenario.
Pity, I never got an answer from Slott of the theory instead getting the wall of not answering. CURSE SLOTT'S WALL!! Worse, I know he's going to rub it in no matter what revelation happens come Danger Zone's aftermath.
Behold, I shall be a blight upon the land, and everything I touch shall wither and die!
