I tried the Gintama manga way, way back, but I didn't like it and stopped reading a few chapters in.

Though, to be fair, the premise kinda made me hope for sort of a sci-fi take on Rurouni Kenshin, which it turned out to decidedly not be.

Huh. I feel pretty much exactly the same.

Tried it out for about 25 chapters. It was kind of fun but it just didn't go anywhere or really do anything with the setting.

'Better' is very vague. I could probably name a few mangas that I consider to be awful that are 'better' than Naruto/Bleach/One Piece in some manner.

Besides, I'm sure most of us have some favourite that we consider better then any of the Top Three. (Me with Negima, for example.) I still read Naruto and Bleach, though, because they are still pretty okay and I'm invested in them.

It's a mistake to assume the most popular manga must be the ones of the highest quality. Rather, they are the ones that appeal fairly well with the broadest demographic.

Okay, I managed to get some free time on my hands and just went through about 60 chapters of Mysterious Girlfriend X. This series is awesome and I'm anxiously awaiting the anime. Up next, Magi!

I'm liking Aiba more and more with each chapter. He's refreshingly normal and sane. A great contrast to Oga.

It was kind of a fight between meta and non-meta.

Hopefully Aijimu won't neutered by this. She was the thing that made me interested in this manga again.

Is it me, or could you easily make the ending of the manga be Ajimu in a straightjacket, with the doctors around her sadly saying that she's retreated further into her fantasy world?

Nah. That trick only works if the story was told from her perspective. Not only is her first appearance a fair bit into the plot, but most of her scenes are from interacting with the Medaka or Zenkichi. In literary terms, the story is told in third person omniscient perspective (since it shifts between following different characters depending on scene) so if it's all her fantasy, it doesn't make sense for her to also be a character in that fantasy.*

Heck, that's how we know she really is delusional about thinking she is a manga character from the story's perspective, even though we also know she really is a manga character from our perspective, which is is what makes it so damn meta!

*Well, okay, there are ways around that. She could be doing the Bartimaeus Trilogy thing, where she is the first person narrator in any scene where she is present and the third person narrator for the rest of the story. But that only makes sense if the story is told in past tense - as in, she'd actually have to be telling this story to someone or writing it down after it happened. If she's in a mental hospitial living through this story in her head, that implies present tense.

It's the things like that, that make this anime fun to watch.

It was a satisfying season finale. Now onward to the Season Season.
