Default Neon Genesis Evangelion 1.11- You are (not) alone & 2.22 - You can (not) advance

so how are the new Evangelion movies? 1.11 and 2.22

im of the school that liked the original series and films, but thought the execution was a bit weird.

any improvements with the new ones?

First off, I believe they are both very good, particularly the second one.

But you need to understand that it goes beyond execution and improvements. It's different. The first movie you'll recognize from start to finish as a more focused, fast paced version of the first 5 episodes, with not much different other than some character moments and a reveal of info that was withheld for a long time in the TV series.

The second one goes off the rails pretty quickly. It's an all new story.

Compared to the TV series I'd say it doesn't get as weighty, though lack of time does give some characters less time to develop, and forces minor characters to become very minor since there is no time to give them (Ritsuko for example) an episode all about them. The information disclosure and character development for the important stuff is fast paced and well done; at the same time you could argue that some of what the characters are going through is less subtle than the TV series, ie is spelled out for the viewer more. Mileage may vary on what that means for you, and it isn't necessarily bad for the film even it comes across as a less sophisticated approach, but the movie is intended to be more approachable for the general audience.

A strong element of the movies so far is that they have managed to self-contain different themes and developments for Shinji's character in both movies. So even though you need to continue watching the movies to get through the story, each movie feels like it arrives at a new destination for Shinji's growth.

You'll notice plenty of minor differences in characters. Shinji is more proactive, and his most downer moments in the movies seem much more about bitterness and anger than self-loathing and depression. Asuka warms up to people faster and seems to have less, or at least different, mother issues. Rei develops wants and desires faster and tries to host a dinner party at one point. Gendo is hard to read, but seems like he dropped a few rungs on the dick scale.

The second one is really really violent and powerful, especially in the end, as disturbing as anything that happened in EoE or the regular series.

First one was complete meh for me though.

Very good english dub as well for both!

well, i watched 1.11 last night (no, not illegally!). enjoyed it qite a bit, its alot more conventional in its structure, which helps, and more action focused instead of all the existential angst of the original series. and some of the new digital animation sequences were pretty damn awesome.

am looking forward to watch 2.22 tonight.
