Default What kind of Avengers team would you like to see handled by the next writer?

Recently there have been a lot of threads speculating as to whom will take over the writing chores on Avengers. A lot of péople have even come up with multiple writers for the multiple titles and teams. Now, let's speculate a little bit more and say that they will more or less try to put the multiple teams gennie back in the bottle and go with a single team (maybe even over multiple titles). What kind of team would you like to see:

Current New Avengers line-up, with mostly never been Avengers - While I personally dislike most opf Bendis line-ups, going as far as considering them too week for the title Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the current one is far from being able to be refered as "street level". The Thing, Ms Marvel and Doc Strange alone bring it up to another level, and other guys like Cage, Spider-Man JJ and Iron Fist are mid-level enough in terms of power to make it interesting. However, with few exceptions it is composed of people who had never been Avengers before Disassembled. Would you like a line-up like this, continuing to include new "out of the left field members, such as Son of Satan, Black Cat, Ghost Rider and the such, with little ties to the original team?

Weaker, street-level team - Some of the most popular of Bendis line-ups had a distinct lack of heavy-hitters, dealing mostly with street crime and not big cosmic threats. Would you be in favor of a team filled with the likes of Captain America, Hawkeye, Widow, Spider-Man, Falcon, Wolverine, and one or another mid-level hitter just to balance things out?

Mostly classic line-up - The forgotten ones by Bendis. Wonder Man, Hercules, Wasp, She-Hulk, Black Knight, Photon, Jack of Hearts, and so on, plus a couple of the mainstays and the ocassional newcommer to keep in tradition.

A power-house line-up - In the mold of Cyclops extinction team, a tem of Avengers that nobody would mess with in bigscreen movie action to constantly save the world. Thor, Hulk, Dr Strange, Ms (Capt) Marvel, Iron Man and other big brusiers to tackle threats that no one else could.

A mix of old and new - New Avengers, Secret Avengers, classic Avengers all thrown together, operating in a new way, that is not the however they want it way of the new Avengers, nor the follow the charter of the classic team. A team composed of guys like Cage, Iron Fist, Spider Woman, Valkyre, Capt Britain, Wasp, Black Panther, Vision and so on...

After voting, feel free on commenting, within your choice, who you like to see in the line-up.

Maybe a team that is well-suited to tackle cosmic threats. I mean, post-AvX, it is obvious that the heroes don't want to be caught with their pants down again having to deal with another Phoenix-level threat. So, maybe the team'll have that on their minds when they're forming. I dunno.

    It depends on the writer.

If the writer is Hickman, than I think a big bombastic power house team is appropriate. He's going to be doing the Avengers-as-JLA, big sci fi threats.

If it's Waid, then his strength will likely be in character work, so a nice classic lineup with lots of character interaction and continuity references is what I'd want to see.

If we're talking about Jason Aaron, I think we'd benefit from a mix of the new and old, but with a focus on the new -- as has been the case with Wolverine and the X Men, where the new are far more interesting than the old, but they all work together.

If we get Fraction, he probably doesn't have one 'thing'; new and old would be fine, I could see him doing a decent street level run.

Id prefer a classic team. But I'd be open for anything that's different from a Bendis-style lineup. He's leaving. Let's see what another writer can come up with
"Our job is to do the impossible and make it look easy." Hawk G.I.Joe #1 (marvel series)

"Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes" Buck Murdoc Airplane II the Sequel

Favorite Writers: Geoff Johns, Larry Hama, Kurt Busiek

Favorite Artists: George Perez, Alex Ross

Favorite Heroes: Captain America, Captain Harlock, Alan Scott, Duke, Optimus Prime

Favorite Villains: Char Aznable, Darth Vader, Megatron, Dr Doom

I think the movie version works pretty well.

Obviously there's the practical advantages of having a cast that's similar to the movie and cartoon. But it's also a relatively classic line up.

That said, pretty much every writer will try and add something new... which is a good thing.

I will always choose a mix of old and new. I would love to see a team where Wonderman is the heavy-hitter and a new guy like Gravity can be mentored by more experienced heroes.
Why aren't you reading Winter Soldier? You should be!

Street level by Scott Snyder and David Aja.

Iron Fist, Spider Woman, Captain America, Black Panther, Wasp and Songbird.
Top 10: Hawkguy, GIJoe Cobra, The Massive, Daredevil, Wonder Woman, Fury MAX, The Black Beetle, Batman, Winter Soldier, Suicide Squad, and The Activity.

Not to butt in or anything, but, see, the way you described it I see a more of a classic team. That was how the Avengers worked before Bendis. A second stringer like Wonder Man could be the team's heaviest hitter and a rookie like Gravity fits perfectly with the Avengers, as opposed to someone like, say, X-23 or Deadpool. What you described is really what I'd like to see again, that I haven't seen in over 8 years.

Mix of old and new. I want some classics like Wasp, Giant-Man, Black Panther, Vision, Wanda, etc along with some of the newer guys Bendis has brought into the ranks like Cage and Dr. Strange. Of course, you always need that element of rookie/outlier character.

I just hope they pick these guys for thematic reasons. I just tried thinking of a few rosters and just through guys I liked together with no rhyme or reason. Thankfully, I'm not a writer.

You made it tough...a mix of old and new and classic line-up can be interpreted the same way.

Mix of old and new. Also, pretty positive it will be Hickman. Since he is leaving the Ultimates, leaving F4 and FF and is writing AvX as well. So bring on the great characterization and let's go with crazy ass stories.

Well I quoted myself as to get that out of the way early on. The classic Avengers always added new members. However, members that usually, though not always (who ever thought someone like Namor would make a good Avenger?), fit the team. With a mix of New and Old, I meant more out of the left field members mixed with the classic, different operating parameters, less respect for tradition conflicting with those that want to do things the old way, etc... Essentially something quite different than we ever had. I hope I made myself clearer now.

    Peace

Honestly, if I were building an Avengers team, it would look a lot like Bendis' teams.

But no Protector or Spider-Woman... or Rulk.

    And Simon would be back!

What kind of stories do you want to tell? I think that question should be addressed first. Sometimes you can catch some "magic" when you take a character and stick them in a situation you wouldn't otherwise imagine them in. Othertimes doing that could be a disaster. One of my favorite Avengers line ups was during Bob Harras run on the book. Black Widow was the leader, Herc, Crystal, Sersi and Black Knight were the core of the team and the more established characters would rotate in and out of the line up. But, I don't always remember the line ups as much as I remember the stories....what made the line up interesting were the stories and subplots that surrounded them. And I think thats true of all the runs for me. The Busiek/Perez Ultron story demanded the classic team and it was awesome storytelling. Bendis version of the Avengers has been a "any one can join" fest that really set up some interesting and sometimes amusing confrontations.
I'm just shooting from the hip, but I really want good Avengers stories and I am not sure that determining the line up first helps that to happen.
If the shoe fits: "a crankly old man standing just on the edge of a crowd gathered for a concert and stamping his feet yelling at the crowd to stop having fun, that they don't know what fun is."
