Rick mentioned in interviews that he had the run planned well into 2011. When Marvel changed the name of the book to Frankencastle he stated that it was to show that Marvel was committed to the change of status within the book, suggesting that it was going to last for quite a while instead of only 5 issues. He also mentioned that Frankencastle would be running into the Dirty Dozen. Finally when the book was cancelled Rick said that the only arc he had solidly planned out that he didn't get to tell was the Dirty Dozen arc but it was pretty obvious he was planning on doing more with Frankencastle. Frank had made a revenge list at the end of issue 17 which suggested future targets in the run. The wackiness of the storyline caused some outrage amongst fans but since Punisher MAX was still going at that time, which meant fans still had straight up Punisher stories, I don't know what all the unnecessary fuss was about. Alot of fans didn't seem to even really have an issue with the story quality, with many of them admitting it was well told. They more or less just had an issue with Franks appearance changing! Rick mentioned in a letters page that if he had told the exact same story but kept Frank's appearance the same no one would have complained. I think he is probably right.
It ended at issue 21.
