As a fan of both manga and western comics, I've come to notice something very interesting regarding piracy. While both manga and western comics are readily available for pirating online, the opinion on piracy between fans of the two is vastly different. From personal experience, most manga fans don't care about piracy and readily do so. Comic fans however, for the most part seem to be vehemently against piracy of comics.
For the record, I'm on the anti-piracy side.
You know..... the funny thing about this subject is that I can't really bring myself to feel strongly about it one way or another. It's just kinda.... "meh" for me.

Hey! I want to know your theory!
It's cruel to just tease like that!

Regarding Overmaster's comment. IIRC, he is from Venezuela. Now, if his country is the same as my lovingly hated homeland (also from South America) when it comes to manga, then getting manga is not just hard.
You're not going to find manga at your local bookstore or comic shop. Chances are, you're not even going to have a local comic shop. Which is kind of sad, because there is a clear market for it. South America is full of generations that grew up on anime
Basically, a lot of manga and anime fans are introduced to the genre through piracy (fansubbed or uploaded anime and scanlated manga) which is often readily available without effort (you can find them easily on Youtube or manga reader sites) whereas comics aren't quite as accessible for pirates, I presume due to different copyright laws. Simple really.
The biggest reason people pirate anime/manga is because really, it's so hard to find and even when stuff IS over here, unless it has a Dragonball Z like following here, it's very expensive. Not to mention the length of time between Japanese release and here. At best, an anime takes a year to get over here. Sometimes more than that. Manga is a bit quicker, but without a lot of same day digital scans officially, pirated weekly scans (which I do, as I want to keep up with series) are pretty much the only way TO see it. That's the ultimate reason.
American comics (especially now with Marvel and DC doing a lot more digital distribution), getting your hands on it is insanely easy compared to manga. That's the main reason I think.
