Default Anyone Else Buy Some Comics Just to Stay "In the Loop"

I took a look at my pull list, which is stupid long, the other day and realized I am reading books I don't even really like... just so I know everything that is happening in the MU.

One example of this is the Avengers. Frankly... I don't like any of the current Avengers really and the story right now is freaking awful. Yet, I continue to buy it because it feels like I am missing something huge that is going on in the MU.

Another example... Generation Hope and New Mutants. Both of those books suck in my opinion but I keep reading them just because they connect to the rest of the X-men books and I want to know what is going on at all times.

Am I the only idiot that does this? I really need to stop supporting crap books just because they are "main" titles.

Staying in the loop is slightly slightly part of what I do . . . but not 100%. I did drop avengers issues completely, recent stories are Norman Osborn returns and it looks like an evil Thor fighting the new avengers, so I'm not buying that crap. However I have been buying recent Uncanny Xmen issues and staying in the loop of what Scott's team is doing is a part of that I admit, another is the fact that it is a storyline based on something that happened in Uncanny Xforce which I like . . . also I am buying scarlet spider although I dislike it, but am hoping it will get good which is kind of like the phenomenon you describe.
FAdam K- How do you read comics and sit around on this board and not know who Gorilla Man is after the last couple of years??

I'm buying AvX to see what happens, i view it mainly as a continuity tax for liking the Marvel Universe even though it might be crap. I also buy Avengers to see what's up...but sometimes i drop arcs and come back when it looks better.
Currently recommending: Daredevil, Mudman ( it's back!), Hawkguy, and FF. Can't miss!

I don't quite do that since I know where my interests lie but I've been largely stockpiling my "To Read" stuff for at least 5 or 6 months so I'm pretty behind on a lot of books.

I think a lot of people do this without noticing it...

If comics weren't such a social hobby, I bet my bookshelf would look completely different.

Buy what you like. That's what I do. I'd go broke if I bought every book I thought was "important."

And personally, I think Generation Hope is great.

I get my comics at the library, I don't care about the loop. I am extraordinarily good at avoiding spoilers, but nobodies perfect.

    this.

I only pay for books I'm curious about or have been enjoying.

What I was about to say. And in all honesty, if Wikias and Comicvine could be more in depth with their character profiles then I would just look at those respective websites.

Pretty much this. I get reviews, read spoilers and sample books, and if I like them enough, I drop the cash on the collected editions.

Here lately, though, I have been avoiding Marvel and DC for the most part.

No, if anything's happened that's actually pertinent to what I'm reading it will be explained sufficiently in the "Previously..." page. That crap where they drop you into the middle of stories tends to happen a lot less in the fringe titles.
