I was so deeply deceived by the Men of War, that I hope this new title will be better.
One major positive point is that IT IS NOT linked to the DCnU. An excellent news!!!
Unfortunately, it is not the same story for the All-Star Western comic book...![]()
Well, thanks for this article. I just called my shop and had them take this from my pull list. I had been under the impression that this new comic would be set in WWII. I've already suffered through Men of War and the Vertigo version of The Haunted Tank.
Why is there this need to take a classic concept and shunt it into the modern day? Can't you tell new, interesting stories with the original characters in their times? Or, better yet, if you're so hell-bent on doing modern war comics - COME UP WITH NEW CHARACTERS. I know this is a shocking concept but you should perhaps have Garth Ennis come in and give you a few pointers or buy a few copies of his Battlefields comic and read them - over and over and over again.
I'm definitely giving this a try
Always loved the concept
I'm from middle-Europe.
This is where I get my comics from.
My experiences with comics are different than yours.
Live with it!
I honestly can't see this book doing that much better than Men of War. Yeah, it's a little wackier, but still... big gamble. They should have made it a $2.99 30 page book instead.
This is nothing new. It's corporate comics. It's all about updating old concepts. Just look at Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, etc.
You should know that DC doesn't do nostalgia time pieces unless they reprint some collection. Marvel still does these back in the day war pieces that don't sell that much. Paul Jenkins had his WWII mini cancelled because of low sales.
So I guess that's the end of that at Marvel as well.
I can't say I have much of an interest in this since it is going to be modern day. Men of War and The Blackhawks didn't/don't work as updates, especially when any contemporary war fiction has to compete with Call of Duty or come off like a GI Joe retread.
I would have hoped that DC would take advantage of their clean slate and really tear into the history of the world before there were superheroes.
The DCU was FILLED with crazy WW2 characters like the Viking Commando (time-displaced viking fighting nazis!), the Minute Commandos (soldierss hit with a shrink ray!), Ghost Patrol (ghost soldiers!), GI Robot, Gravedigger, Monsieur X, as well as the Phantom Clipper and the Ruptured Duck (the air and sea versions of the Haunted Tank). Not to mention the DC regulars like Sgt. Rock, Unknown Soldier, The Blackhawks, and The Losers.
DC has WW2 characters for every theater of the war across the globe that were filled with weird science characters, supernatural characters, espionage characters, crazy vehicles and straight up soldiers.
DC's current war & western comics could work the same way as the Demon Knights title, as a look back into the new DC's history before caped superheroes existed, but they seem so literal minded.
DC has an opportunity to create their own WW2 history that could be tied to the present while celebrating the treasure trove of characters and story inspiration they have already on hand.
I love the WWII stuff, but it wouldn't sell now.
Men of War just wasn't good. Blackhawk didn't even show a tie to the previous Blackhawks in any way that I could see.
It's easy to say make a new character, but they don't sell, and DC, like Marvel, has tons of characters with at least some kind of recognition and following already.
I guess I'm the only one willing to admit I'm excited and looking forward to this title coming out. I'll give it six issues to see what it's like. But I'm pretty easy to please.
I am interested in "The War That Time Forgot", but not the other stories. I plan on picking it up anyway because I like the look of what the artists have drawn in the past, but if the backups, which sound like they're going to be less backup and more half of the comic from the 14 page comment, aren't interesting, I don't think I'll be able to justify paying $3.99 for the comic.
Maybe I just want more Xenozoic...

Not sure if there is room in my monthly comic budget for this, but I may give it a sample at some point. Finally got around to checking out Men of War.
