I checked the Mass Effect Wiki and you're right, both games had the same number of enemy types.

    ME2 had:

Mercs - in tech, biotic and soldier flavors (various races)

    Krogan

    Vorcha - regular & pyro

    Mechs - big & small

    Dogs - robot & varren

    Rachni-thingies

Geth -trooper, rocket, hunters, Primes & Colossus

Reapers - Husks (normal & explodey), Scions & Abominations

Collectors - Drones, Assassins, Guardians, Praetorians & General

    Whereas Mass Effect 3 had:

Cerberus - Troopers, Guardians, Centurions, Engineers, Turrets, Snipers, Biotics, Mechs

Geth -Troopers, Rocket, Hunters, Pyros, Drones, Turrets & Primes

Reapers - Husks (normal & explodey), Cannibals, Ravagers, Swarmers, Marauders, Brutes, Banshees, Rachni, Harvester

Honestly I'm just really happy ME3 didn't have Scions. I really, really, really hated those bastards.

I still haven't finished the game on the hardest difficulty because I can't get past one group of Scions / Abominations during the suicide mission.
The Jaw Squad is dead. Long live the Jaw.

This is completely in line with how the Reapers were portrayed, being eternally patient.
The only reason I can think of them not doing that is the loss of the Keepers from their control, and the firewall that Vigil gave Shepard that prevented them from directly accessing the Citadel controls. If Bioware said that, I wouldn't be questioning their strategy. Since they didn't, its all I have to explain why they would ignore such a glaring strategic opening.
I think the biggest reason why the ignored such a glaring strategic opening, is that it would make for a crummy game to play without the mass relays.

I'm about 1/2 done with ME3 now on my replay all the way from the beginning as a renegade adept.

I usually played as a soldier before and I can't believe how much easier the game is playing as an adept. I'm playing one level higher difficulty than my first time through ME3 yet I hardly ever fire a shot. Every battle is basically my adept throwing out singularities and warps as fast as possible (I'm only carrying two weapons so my recharge is fast). Now and then Garrus or Edi throws an overload. The only place that even got semi hard was Grissom Academy but that was more due to dumb AI decisions for Edi and Garrus to jump on top of barricades instead of staying behind cover.

And Wreave is an asshole. I killed Wrex on purpose just to see how things would change and Wreave made me want to not cure the genophage so I didn't. Though the game treated it as a renegade option I personally was seeing it as paragon by that point.
Price your book at $3.99 and I'll trade wait. Make me wait too long for the trade PAPERback and I'll say screw it. I'm looking at you Marvel and Spider Island.

And I've now finished ME3 for 2nd time. Brilliant, brilliant, attempt at an ending by Bioware. I give them an A+ for what they were trying but only a C+ on execution. Its so clear, especially on a replay when your looking for all the signs, that the ending was all in Shepards head and was an indoctrination attempt. Its such an awesome con job but where Bioware screwed up was in not making it a bit more obvious at the end. I missed it, as did many apparently, on my first time through which is why their grade on the ending gets downgraded a lot. It was only on my 2nd time through and having already read all about the theory that it became so apparent. You can be subtle in a 2 hr movie because everything is fresh in the mind but in a 30+ hr game you've got to be more obvious because it may be weeks or months before you reach the end.

My biggest actual criticism of the game is the fact you have to do multiplayer to get the best ending and the fact that X-box forces you into a paid membership to play multiplayer.

Anyway, can't wait til the DLC which will expand the ending at which point I'll start ME3 again with my original female paragon Shep.

You don't need multiplayer to get the "best" ending. It's perfectly doable without it. I got all 3 choices when I did it on my only play through so far.

On the other hand, MP is a lot of fun, and pretty much what I was hoping for. It's very easy to exploit the AI at times, but it's totally more fun to go crazy run and gun/power.

Last night, my group did the usual Firebase White/Geth farming run, but I used my Asari Justicar with Warp Biotic Sphere. The two players I've been playing with last night both switched to the Krogan Vanguard, and we setup a ton of biotic explosions and ran around instead of turtling up. The 4th person was a Batarian Sentinel with Shockwave, so he triggered some explosions from time to time. We all died a lot, but it was hell lot of more fun than just turtling up on White.

No, you do. Unles you can get your war readyness above what is possible in single player, you won't get that extra bit where Shepard breathes.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

and there is the rub....I think a majority of people bitching about the ending are primarily cranky with Shepards "outcome", if you had the exact same ending and the outcome was the exact opposite...most would be ok

its like their favorite toy got taken away or something

I'm much more pissed about how nebulous things are in general instead of the Shep living or dying. To quote Ivan Drago "If he dies, he dies". A hero sacrificing himself to save the universe is fine with me. It's the actions with Starchild and the WTF of Normandy + crew getting off at a random terran planet was totally fucked up and nonsense.

I wouldn't be. I'm cranky because all three endings are largely identical, and none of them makes much sense, even if you believe the indoctrination theory/

I've been reading threads on this on various forums, but I do think the majority doesn't really mind that Shep kicked the bucket all that much.
